The 24th-ranked Arizona State University women's basketball team (22-9) will face 12th-seeded Eastern Kentucky (23-7) in the first round of the 2005 NCAA Division I Championship on Saturday, March 19 in Fresno, Calif.
ESPN2 will televise ASU's game with EKU at 11 a.m. Pacific (12 p.m. Mountain) on Saturday.
The winner of ASU's game will take on the winner of the first-round game between fourth-seeded Notre Dame (26-5) and 13th-seeded UC Santa Barbara (21-8) on Monday, March 21 in Fresno with ESPN2 televising the action. Times for the second-round games will be announced after the completion of all of the first-round contests.
Fans wishing to purchase tickets for the first- and second-round games in Fresno should call the Sun Devil ticket office at (480) 965-2381 by 12 p.m. on Tuesday.
For the fifth-seeded Sun Devils, this year's NCAA Tournament appearance marks ASU's sixth all-time NCAA bid and its first since advancing to the second round in 2002. It also marks the third NCAA Tournament invitation for ninth-year head coach Charli Turner Thorne, who has become the first coach in school history to lead the Sun Devils to three NCAA Tournament appearances.
ASU has turned in a 22-9 overall record this season, which marks the seventh 20-win campaign in school history and the third for Turner Thorne, who is the all-time winningest coach in ASU women's basketball history.
ASU and Wells Fargo Arena have been selected to host the Tempe Regional of the 2005 NCAA Division I Championship with games scheduled for March 26 and 28. If ASU advances to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen, the team will play in Tempe. Tickets for the Tempe Regional are on sale now at the ASU ticket office.
