TEMPE, Ariz. (www.thesundevils.com) -- Breaking her second record in as many days, sophomore Caitlin Andrew (San Antonio, Texas) etched her name in the ASU record books by swimming the opening leg of the 400-yard freestyle relay in just 49.33 giving her the fastest time in the 100-yard freestyle in school history. Nine individuals and one relay team recorded NCAA consideration times for Arizona State University swimming Saturday at the Texas Invitational hosted by the University of Texas at Austin. At the Ohio State University Swimming and Diving Invitational, senior Joona Puhakka (Helsinki, Finland) won the three-meter springboard event completing a sweep of the springboard events.
The 400-yard freestyle relay team and seven of the nine individuals who recorded NCAA consideration times came from the women's team. Leading the way for the Sun Devils was Andrew who touched the wall in a NCAA consideration time of 1:58.69 in the 200-yard backstroke. Her time won the B final and puts her in second-place in the ASU record books, just .47 off of the school record. Andrew also swam the opening leg of the 400-yard freestyle relay for the "A" relay team that recorded a NCAA consideration time.
Freshman Jen Beckberger (Ajax, Ontario) swam the 100-yard freestyle in NCAA consideration time 50.14. Beckberger won the B final and recorded the third-fastest time in school history in the event. Beckberger was also a part of the 400-yard freestyle relay team that had a NCAA consideration time. Freshman Amy Konowalik (Derby, England) won the B final in the 200-yard breaststroke and put herself in fifth place in the ASU record books with a time of 2:15.34. Also clocking NCAA consideration times was junior Christine Creek (Simi Valley, Calif.) in the 200-yard breaststroke and sophomore Ellis Schieman (Shaker Heights, Ohio) in the 200-yard butterfly. Senior Kathryn Hennessy (Kansas City, Mo.) and sophomore Sarah Fischer (Boulder, Colo.) recorded NCAA consideration times in the 1650-yard freestyle.
On the men's side, sophomore Lucas Azevedo (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) recorded a NCAA consideration time of 15:25.68 in the 1650-yard freestyle. In the 200-yard breaststroke, senior Joey Clements (Rowland Heights, Calif.) recorded a season-best and NCAA consideration time of 2:00.66.
ASU swimming and diving has nearly a month off until it hosts Purdue (men) and Rice (women) Jan. 6 at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center.
