ATHENS - Joona Puhakka, a junior member of the Arizona State swimming and diving program, finished 13th in the qualifying round of the men's 3-meter springboard competition Monday, earning him a spot in Tuesday's final and a chance at winning his first Olympic Medal. Puhakka is competing in his second Olympic Games for Finland.
Puhakka finished 13th in the first round of the 3-meter springboard with an overall score of 414.69, qualifying him to compete in the semifinal Tuesday. He is the reigning NCAA Champion and finished second in the European Championships in this event.
Senior Agnes Kovacs concluded competition for her home country of Hungary last Thursday, finishing fifth in the 200m breaststroke final with a time of 2:26.12. She returns to ASU this season as the school record holder in the 200 breaststroke, 200 IM and 400 IM.
Senior Florencia Szigeti, competing for Argentina, clocked a time of 26.84 in the women's 50m freestyle last Friday finishing 37th and rounding out competition for Sun Devil swimmers in Athens. Szigeti is the reigning Pac-10 Champion in the 200 freestyle and holds the school record in the 100 and 200 freestyle events.
The diving events at the Summer Games will be contested through August 28.
