TEMPE, Ariz. - Two members of the Arizona State wrestling team earned positions on the Pac-10 Conference All-Academic teams the conference announced Thursday. Curtis Ray (Fr., Mesa, Ariz.) and Nick Frost (Sr., Tucson, Ariz.) represented the Sun Devils on the academic lists, extending the program's streak of consecutive seasons with at least one member of the team earning academic honors to nine years.
Ray made the first team after accumulating a 3.89 grade point average in general studies and holds the highest average among all conference academic honorees. As a redshirt freshman, Ray competed at 133 pounds at the start of the year, filling in for an injured Mike Simpson. Ray built a 2-6 record in his first varsity action as a member of the program.
Frost closed out his senior with his third conference academic honor and his second time on the second team lists. A first-team honoree in last season, Frost holds a 3.10 GPA in computer science engineering. He joins current Sun Devil assistant coach Aaron Simpson as the only ASU grapplers to earn three academic Pac-10 honors in their careers. In his final campaign, Frost won his second Pac-10 title after moving up to 184 pounds and advanced to the NCAA Championships where he did not place after going 2-2 in the national tournament.
Overall, 19 different Sun Devil wrestlers have earned Academic All-Pac-10 accolades since the conference began awarding the honor in 1991. The 19 athletes have combined to earn 28 awards with 15 going for first-team honors, 12 for second team and one honorable mention.
