TEMPE, Ariz. - The 2004 outdoor track and field season rolls along for Arizona State this week with a trio of meets on the schedule, including the third of four home meets. The week opens with the Arizona Multi Event meet Tuesday and Wednesday in Tucson, Ariz., and will be followed by the Arizona State Invitational on Friday. The final meet is the Stanford Invitational Friday and Saturday in Palo Alto, Calif.
GUEST LIST
The Arizona State Invitational will play host to several teams this weekend, including ASU, Northern Arizona, Ohio State, Iowa State, Colorado, Xavier and Idaho. Those teams also will compete with unattached athletes that have registered.
ARIZONA MULTI
Several Sun Devils will head south to Tucson for the Arizona Multi Event meet Tuesday and Wednesday, including Jacquelyn Johnson on the women's side and both Joshua Kinnaman and Ryan Ehler for the men. The women's heptathlon will feature first day competitions in the 100m hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200m dash while the men's decathlon will feature the 100m dash, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400m dash. The final day of comeptition for the women will feature the long jump, javelin and 800m run while the men will battle in the 110m high hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500m run.
NATIONAL LEADERS
At the Baldy Castillo Invitational over the weekend, 23 regional standards were met by Sun Devil athletes with a few of the marks being some of the best in the nation. On the national lists, Desiree Davila is No. 1 in the nation at 1,500m for the women while Lewis Banda (200m), Domenik Peterson (400m), Dan Maher (1,500m) and the 4x100m relay hold top billing for the men. Regionally, four women's marks are tops in the west while five men's marks rank No. 1 in the region.
FAST FRESHMEN
Three Arizona State men rank among the best in the nation so far this season following just their second outdoor meet in the collegiate ranks. Steven Koehnemann is second in the nation at 100m (10.39) and third at 200m (21.15) and is part of the No. 1 4x100m relay team (39.33). Domenik Peterson in the 400m (46.01), also a member of the 4x100m relay, is No. 1 as well. Aaron Aguayo (3:45.55) is No. 3 in the nation at 1,500m.
Jacquelyn Johnson, who also is a freshman, is ranked fifth in the nation in the 100m hurdles (13.83) for the women.
ALL-AMERICANS
Two weekends ago, members of the track and field program traveled to Fayetteville, Ark., for the 2004 NCAA Indoor Championships. Of the 10 athletes that competed in the national event, six returned home as All-Americans. Those Sun Devils included Lewis Banda (4x400m), Jason Barton (4x400m and 400m), Domenik Peterson (4x400m and 200m), Seth Amoo (4x400m), Amy Hastings (5,000m) and Jacquelyn Johnson (pentathlon).
As a team, the men finished tied for 12th with 17 points earned while the women took a tie for 27th with eight points.
MORE FRESHMAN SUCCESS
Johnson was not the only Sun Devil freshman that had an impressive debut at the NCAA Championships. Domenik Peterson competed in three races to earn All-America honors twice while setting one school record. Individually, Peterson finished fourth in the 200m dash with an ASU record time of 20.54. He then anchored the men's 4x400m relay team to a third place finish in the final event of the meet.
BARTON SHINES ON NATIONAL STAGE
Jason Barton joined Peterson as the only Sun Devils to earn multiple All-America honors at the indoor meet. Barton finished third in the 400m dash with a school record of 45.56 before running the leadoff leg of the relay team that finished third.
ACADEMIC HONORS
The men's and women's cross country have been honored by their respective national coaches associations for their success in the classroom. The men were honored by the United States Cross Country Coaches Association while the women earned their sixth honor in as many years from the Women's Intercollegiate Cross Country Association.
LAST TIME (OUTDOOR): BALDY CASTILLO
The Baldy Castillo Invitational wrapped up Saturday with the host Arizona State track and field team recording 15 total marks that earned its individuals berths into the NCAA West Region and Pac-10 Conference championship meets later this season. Kandace Tucker led the charge by winning the sprint double, capturing gold in the 100m (11.79) and 200m dashes (23.72). The women won five events with a pair of second and third place finishes while the men also took home five golds with another three third place finishes.
On the women's side, the 4x100m, 4x400m and 4x800m relay teams all won their respective races to round out the victories for ASU. The men got wins from its 4x100m relay, Domenik Peterson (400m), Lewis Banda (200m) and a tie in the pole vault between Brandon Glenn and Stephen Dolk.
Overall, six women's marks went down as regional qualifiers. Those athletes included the 4x100m and 4x400m relays, Jacquelyn Johnson (100m hurdles), Tucker (200m), Cassandra Reed (200m), Sandra Orsund (discus). A total of six marks also earned athletes berths into the conference meet and those included Johnson (100m hurdles), Christina Hardeman (400m), Tucker (100m and 200m), Reed (200m) and Orsund (discus).
On the men's side, nine regional and 10 conference standards were met on the day. The 4x100m relay, Peterson (400m), Steve Fitch (400m), Steven Koehnemann (100m and 200m), Seth Amoo (200m), Lewis Banda (200m), Dolk (pole vault) and Glenn (pole vault) each earned regional berths while Peterson (400m), Fitch (400m), Koehnemann (100m and 200m), Amoo (100m and 200m), Jeff Dodge (800m), Banda (200m), Dolk (pole vault) and Glenn (pole vault) each earned spots in the conference meet.
UP NEXT
Much like in the indoor season, the Sun Devils will travel to the site of the NCAA Championships for a meet, this time taking to the track in Austin, Texas, for the Texas Relays. The site of the national outdoor meet, Arizona State will competed April 2-3. One week later, the Sun Devils return home for their final home meet of the season with the Sun Angel Classic presented by Coca-Cola, April 10.
