Kov?cs Wins 200m Breaststroke At US Spring Nationals

2003 ConocoPhillips Spring National Championship

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The Arizona State swimmers at the 2003 ConocoPhillips Spring National Championships got their meet underway in fine fashion Wednesday behind the lead of ?gnes Kov?cs, who won the championship in the 200m breaststroke.

Kov?cs swam the long course 200m breaststroke for the first time this year-the event in which she is the defending Olympic and World Champion-and got her preparations for this summer's FINA World Championships started in fine form. She touched the wall in 2:29.48 to take home first in a field that included NCAA Champion Tara Kirk and NCAA runner-up Anne Poleska. Kov?cs was the number one seed coming into tonight's finals after being the only woman in the morning prelims to break 2:30.00.

There were three other Sun Devils who took part in "A" championships finals on the evening including David Kolozar, who placed fourth in the 200m butterfly in a time of 2:00.06. Ahmed Hussein placed sixth in the 200m backstroke after recording a 2:02.62 with teammate Christian Harcsas two spots behind him in eighth place after touching the wall in 2:05.13.

Florencia Szigeti competed in the "C" final of the 100m freestyle and placed 20th after clocking a 57.39.

Action at the Indiana University Natatorium resumes tomorrow morning with prelims beginning at 9 a.m. for the 200m freestyle, the 400m IM, and the 400m freestyle relay. Finals begin at 6 p.m. Swimming for ASU will be Szigeti and Petra Banovic in the 200m free and Kov?cs in the 400m IM. The Sun Devil women are also entered in the 400m free relay.
