The Arizona State men's basketball program has signed junior college standout Steve Moore (Compton, Calif./Eastern Oklahoma State College), head coach Rob Evans announced today. Moore will join the Sun Devil program in the summer of 2003.
"Steve fits into our system very well and will be able to help us on the perimeter immediately," says Evans, who will enter his sixth season at Arizona State in 2003-2004. "He works very hard and is very athletic. Most importantly, he was very comfortable with our program on his visit. He is excited about our returning players and one of our seniors (Curtis Millage) did a great job in talking about our program's future."
Moore was listed by Basketball Times as the 17th-best junior college prospect in the preseason. The southpaw averaged 17 points per game and shot 80 percent from the free throw line this past year at Eastern Oklahoma State College in Wilburton after transferring from Santa Ana College. At Santa Ana , he was the sixth-leading scorer in the California community colleges with a 23.2 points per game mark in 2001-2002, the third-best mark in Santa Ana history. He also posted school records for three-pointers made (115) and attempted (292). Moore hit a school record nine three-pointers in a 36-point effort against Bakersfield in 2001, and he twice scored 38, tied for the fifth-best mark in school history. He also made 75.6 percent (127-of-168) of his free throws. Moore averaged 16 points per game on the Dominguez (Calif.) High School team in 2000-2001 that went 35-2 with current Chicago Bull Tyson Chandler.
"All five players we signed this year were recruited by top schools and with an NCAA appearance and a new locker room we look forward to talking with more student-athletes summer. Our seniors set the stage a few years ago when they signed in the fall of 1999, and those kids are one of the reasons we have had good success in recruiting as they are all on track to graduate. All of the newcomers next year have a chance to make an immediate impact," says Evans.
ASU has had recent success with its spring signees, as it inked Curtis Millage in the 2001 spring signing period. Millage ended his career with 853 points, the eighth-best among two-year players in ASU history, and averaged 15.9 points per game this past season, tenth in the Pac-10. Jamal Hill signed with ASU last spring out of San Jose City College and posted 10 double-figure games this season. He played in all 32 contests, averaged 6.3 points and was second on the team with 28 three-pointers.
The 2003 spring signing period for basketball runs from April 16-May 15.
