PALO ALTO, Calif. - Led by sophomore Jimin Kang, the Arizona State women's golf team is in seventh place after the first round of the NCAA West Regional, being held Thursday-Saturday, May 9-11 at the par 72, 6,199-yard Stanford Golf Course.
The Sun Devils shot a 20-over par 308 Thursday and are tied for seventh after the first round, six strokes out of the top five and 19 strokes off the lead of Pepperdine which shot a one-over 289 in the first round. UCLA is in second after shooting an eight-over 296, while California (297), Arizona (299) and New Mexico (302) round out the top five teams after the first round.
Kang, who won the Pac-10 Championships in her last tournament, led the Sun Devils individually, carding a one-over 73 in the first round to tie for ninth, four strokes off the lead of Pepperdine's Katherine Hull who turned in the best round of the day with a three-under 69 on Thursday.
Junior Ga?lle Truet shot a four-over 76 and is tied for 26th, while junior Blair O'Neal is tied for 42nd after carding a 78 in the first round. Freshman Erin Tone is tied for 70th with an 81 on Thursday, and junior Melanie Hunt rounds out the Sun Devil lineup and is tied for 82nd after opening the tournament with an 83.
The top eight teams and two individuals at the NCAA West Regional will advance to the NCAA Championships which will be held May 21-24 at the Washington National Golf Course in Auburn, Wash. Eight teams and two individuals will also qualify for the NCAA Championships this weekend at the NCAA Central Regional in East Lansing, Mich., and at the NCAA East Regional in Baton Rouge, La.
