March 19, 2002

This Week
With 10 athletes qualified to compete, Arizona State's women's swimming team seeks its first top-20 finish since 1995 and its first top-10 finish since 1993, when the Sun Devils take to the pool at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in College Station, Texas, for the 2002 NCAA Women's Swimming & Diving Championships, March 21-23. The Sun Devils are coming off their seventh consecutive sixth-place finish at the Pac-10 Championships, however ASU placed only behind teams that it already trailed in the national standings. Among its 10-woman field, freshman ?gnes Kov?cs -- the reigning Olympic and World Champion in the 200-meter breast and the recently awarded Pac-10 Champion in the 200-yard breast -- carries ASU's best chance of winning its first individual national title since Beata Kaszuba won both the 100 and 200 breast titles in 1995. Although the 200y breast is her strongest event, Kov?cs should also contend in the 100y breast and 400y IM.

NCAA Championship Notes
In its 20 years of NCAA Championship participation, ASU's women's swimming and diving team has placed in the top-25 all but twice, when the team took 28th and 29th in 1997 and 1998, respectively. ASU has 10 top-15 finishes, but hasn't finished better than 21st since 1995 when it placed 14th. ASU has six top-10 finishes all-time, including four-straight from 1987-1990, but the Sun Devils have been inside the top-10 only once since then, taking ninth in 1993. ASU's all-time best finish started that top-10 run, when the Sun Devils came off a fifth-place conference finish to place sixth in 1988. In the Mike Chasson era, ASU has seen respective finishes of 23rd, 21st-t, 21st.

ASU, Last Time In The Pool
For the seventh straight year the ASU women placed sixth at the Pac-10 Championships. However, for the first time in seven years, ASU earned some conference hardware as ?gnes Kov?cs nabbed the program's first individual event title since 1995. In addition to a first-place finish in the 200 breast, Kov?cs finished runner-up in the 100 breast and 400 IM. Also earning runner-up efforts for ASU were Sarah Baham in the 100y fly and Brooke Townsend in the 1650 free. In all, ASU came away with one first-place finish, four runner-up finishes and seven school records.

Up Next For The Sun Devils
On the 2001-02 schedule, only the men's NCAA Championships remain uncontested. As with the women, the Sun Devils have qualified 10 men into the national meet: Nick Brunelli, Christian Harcsas, Ahmed Hussein, Anders Lyrbring, Russell MacDonald, Simon MacDonald, Justin Mathias, Gavin Meadows, Bo West and Bobby Zaabadich. The men's NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships are March 28-30 from Athens, Ga.
