Track and Field Takes Home Three Meet Titles In Final Day Of Willie Williams Classic

TUCSON, Ariz. - Led by sophomore Steve Fitch's win in the men's 400m and Sun Devil sweeps of the women's 4x100 and 4x400 meter relay races, Arizona State track and field wrapped up action at the Willie Williams Classic held at the University of Arizona's Drachman Stadium in Tucson, Ariz., Saturday.

The ASU women's 4x400m relay team clocked the only NCAA qualifying time of the two-day meet for the Sun Devils, winning the race in 3:37.00 and surpassing the NCAA provisional standard. Also victorious was the women's 4x100m relay team with its winning time of 46.36 seconds.

Fitch came away with ASU's only individual meet title of the day, winning the men's 400m in a Pac-10 qualifying time of 47.39. Winning ASU's other individual title was senior Yolanda Meservey who won the women's shot put Friday with a personal best and Pac-10 qualifying mark of 47 feet, 5.25 inches.

Along with Fitch, two of the top three finishers in the men's 400m were Sun Devils as junior Lorenzo Parham placed third in 47.82. Finishing second in 47.50 was former ASU sprint standout, Michael Campbell.

ASU also dominated the top-four finishes in the women's 400m, as junior Joni Smith was the runner-up with a Pac-10 qualifying time of 54.95 and senior Candida Coulson was fourth in 55.46.

In the women's discus, sophomore Sandra Orsund and freshman Julia Pedersen went two-three, duplicating their standing from yesterday's shot put competition. Orsund was the discus runner-up with a Pac-10 qualifying mark and personal best throw of 162 feet, eight inches. Pedersen was third with a Pac-10 qualifying mark of 152-2.

Also notching runner-up finishes and Pac-10 qualifying marks for ASU were senior Olivia Mazzaglia in the women's high jump (5-7) and junior Luiz Mello in the men's 100m (10.52). Senior David Wood placed fifth in the men's discus with a Pac-10 qualifying mark of 172-7.

Up next, the Sun Devils will play host to the Baldy Castillo Invitational held Friday, March 22, through Saturday, March 23, at Sun Angel Stadium in Tempe. Field events Friday begin with the women's hammer at 9:30 a.m., followed by the men's hammer. Additional field events get underway at 4 p.m., leading up to the distance carnival at 6 p.m. MST. Saturday, field events begin at 11 a.m., followed by running events at 1 p.m.
