AUSTIN, Texas -- ?gnes Kov?cs and Claire Hedenskog set Arizona State school records to lead the 20th-ranked Arizona State women's swimming & diving team on the first day of competition at the Texas Invitational on Thursday. Fast times were the rule of the day as nearly every Sun Devil set a season best time in at least one event.
Kov?cs blew away the Sun Devil record in the 200 IM by over two seconds as she recorded a 1:58.13 and an NCAA "A" time on her way to a second-place finish. Claire Hedenskog bested her own school record in the 50 free by touching the wall in 23.10 to finish third and lower her NCAA "B" time in that event. Hedenskog beat her school record by a tenth of a second.
Florencia Szigeti set a personal best in the 50 free (23.41), which places her fifth on the ASU all-time top ten and notched her first NCAA "B" consideration time in the 2002-2003 campaign. She finished 12th in the finals.
Swimming the 500 free for the first time as a Sun Devil, junior transfer Petra Banovic finished sixth in the finals (4:50.78) to notch her first NCAA "B" time for ASU. Banovic also recorded NCAA consideration in the 200 IM (2:03.70) preliminaries.
The women's 200 free relay (1:33.42) and 400 medley relay (3:42.47) each recorded NCAA consideration and finished sixth and third, respectively.
In the diving pool, Trisha Tumlinson was the only Sun Devil to make it to the final round of the 3-meter springboard. She recorded a 446.95 in the first 11-dive event on the year for the squad.
