TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona State softball pitcher/designated player Kristen Swetel has been named Pac-10 Player of the Week for the week of March 26-April 1, the Pacific-10 office announced Monday.
Swetel, a freshman from Mesa, Arizona (Dobson High School) posted one of Arizona State's two wins over the weekend as she shutdown 14th-ranked Oregon State, as well as producing the game-winning hits in both of ASU's wins.
In the Oregon State game, Swetel came in relief in the fourth inning with two runners on and no outs. She then got out of the jam and limited the Beavers to only three hits and one run for the next three innings to post her fourth win of the season.
Additionally, with the score tied at 1-1 apiece, Swetel came to the plate, and took the count full, when she then singled to right field to drive in two crucial runs which turned out to be the game winner. On the day, Swetel went 2-for-2 with two RBIs.
In the first game against the University of Oregon, Swetel came in relief again and pitched three and a third scoreless innings to lower her earned run average to 0.71.
In the second game against Oregon, Swetel's bat again proved to produce the game-winner as she belted a full count, two-out pitch over the left field fence for a three-run shot. In the game she went 2-for-3.
Overall during the three-game weekend Swetel went 1-0, pitched 6.1 innings, allowed six hits and one run. At the plate she went 4-for-5 with a home run, five RBIs (both game-winners) and a run scored.
This is the first weekly honor for Swetel and Arizona State's second honor this year (Kirsten Voak earned Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week). It also marks Arizona State's 28th overall honor.
