TEMPE, Ariz. -- One of the nation's best teams in the pool and in the classroom, Arizona State's women's swimming team saw seven of its members honored to Pac-10 Conference All-Academic teams, while ASU's men contributed two Friday.
Senior diver Trish Malatesta was joined by a trio of Sun Devil swimmers on the Pac-10 women's All-Academic first team: senior Elizabeth Lightner, junior Amanda Stanford and sophomore Josie Jedick. Only Stanford University had as many first-team awardees as ASU.
Malatesta, a senior from Glendora, Calif., is an exercise science major with a 4.00 GPA. At this year's Georgia Invitational, Malatesta set a school record with a 438.65 point total in the platform dive.
Breaststrokers Lightner and Jedick also have perfect 4.00 GPAs in psychology and exercise science, respectively. Stanford, who tallied three wins in the 1000-yard freestyle this season, has a 3.66 GPA in conservation biology.
Picking up second-team honors for ASU was senior Kelli Sasada, a biology major with a 3.39 GPA. Honorable mention status was awarded to junior diver Natalie Burgess and breaststroke/individual medley specialist junior Riley Mants. Burgess, of Phoenix, Ariz., is a communications major with a 3.25 GPA. Mants is majoring in education with a 3.09 GPA.
Two members of ASU's men's swimming team also earned All-Academic honors. Junior Bo West, a business major with a 3.30 GPA, took home first-team accolades. Sophomore diver Gregg Helland was named a second-team selection. Helland has a 3.60 GPA in biology.
