This Week --
Almost five months after the season opened at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center in a dual meet vs. UNLV, six members of Arizona State's men's swimming and diving team will represent the Sun Devils in six swimming events, plus all three diving events, at the 2001 NCAA Championships at Rec Natatorium in College Station, Texas. Competition begins Thursday, March 22 and continues through Saturday, March 24.
THE EVENTS --
500y Freestyle --
ASU is represented by Gavin Meadows. Meadows has the 21st-fastest qualifying time at 4:21.85, which is the seventh all-time at ASU. The top seed in the event is USC's Klete Keller at 4:10.83. Michigan's Tom Dolan set the NCAA record of 4:08.75 in 1995.
200y Freestyle --
ASU is represented by Gavin Meadows, Anders Lyrbring, Scott VonSchoff and Bo West. Meadows has the 11th-fastest qualifying time at 1:36.31, which is seventh all-time at ASU. Lyrbring has the 18th-fastest qualifying time at 1:36.70. His career best of 1:35.89 is fourth all-time at ASU. VonSchoff has the 21st-fastest qualifying time of 1:36.75, which is his personal best. Lyrbring has the 53rd-fastest qualifying time at 44.59. His career best 44.23 is tenth all-time at ASU. West has the 61st-fastest qualifying time at a career-best 44.75. THE SWIMMERS --
Nick Brunelli --
A freshman from Mansfield, Mass., Brunelli finished 12th in the 100y back at the Pac-10 Championships.
Anders Lyrbring --
A sophomore from Kungalv, Sweden, Lyrbring finished 16th in the 200y free at the 2000 NCAA Championships. At this year's Pac-10s, he finished sixth in the 200y free and 14th in the 100y free.
Gavin Meadows --
A freshman, Meadows finished fourth in the 200y free and fifth in the 500y free at this year's Pac-10 Championships.
Scott VonSchoff --
A senior from Napa, Calif., VonSchoff tied for 18th in the 200y free at the 2000 NCAA Championships. At this year's Pac-10 Championships, he finished 10th in the 200y free and eighth in the 100y free.
Bo West --
A junior from Esbjerg, Denmark, West finished 12th in the 200y free and 15th in the 100y free at this year's Pac-10 Championships.
THE DIVER --
Marc Briggs --
A senior from Madera, Calif., Briggs will represent ASU in the diving events. Last year Briggs became ASU's first diving All-American since 1983 with an eighth-place finish on platform at the NCAAs. He also finished 15th on the 3-meter at the 2000 NCAAs. Briggs is the ASU record-holder in five diving disciplines: 1-meter (6-dive optionals) 392.48, 1-meter (11 dives) 570.50, 3-meter (6 dives) 365.25, 3-meter (11 dives) 632.25, Platform 520.50. At this year's Zone E Diving Championships, Briggs finished fourth in the 1-meter, third in the 3-meter and fourth on platform.
