KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Against the No. 6 Tennessee Volunteers, Arizona State's 12th-ranked men's swimming and diving team lost 133.5-102.5 at the Student Aquatic Center in Knoxville, Tenn., Friday.
Although ASU dropped to 3-2 on the season, senior Scott VonSchoff brought his magical winning streak into 2001. In the 200-yard freestyle, VonSchoff cruised in at 1:39.04, holding off Tennesse's Greg Simpson, who finished second in 1:39.35. Then, the team co-captain swam 45.19 for his win in the 100y free, and anchored the 400y free relay team that, although uncontested by Tennessee, produced ASU's second-fastest time of the year in 3:01.68. With that trio of wins, VonSchoff has now earned first-place in each of his 15 races in dual meets this season.
As spectacular as VonSchoff was and has been, he was not the only Sun Devil swimmer to sparkle in Knoxville. Swimming in his first meet of the season, freshman Ahmed Hussein won the 200y backstroke in 1:49.51, the fastest time by an ASU swimmer this year.
Also grabbing first-place points was sophomore Anders Lyrbring, who in his first 500y free of the year swam ASU's fastest time this season: 4:34.65.
Sun Devil divers were led by senior All-American Marc Briggs. Although he managed only third-place in the 3-meter dive (312.14), Briggs performed to 337.04 points in the 1-meter to capture first-place.
For Tennessee, which captured the top spot in seven of the 13 events, freshman Andrew Bree was the lone swimmer to win more than one individual race. Bree's 1:52.15 in the 200y individual medley just did beat the Sun Devils' Austin Paulsen, who settled for second in 1:52.40. Bree's other win occurred in the 200y breaststroke where the Volunteers swept the top three spots, with his 2:05.62 leading the way.
The ASU men will be back in action tomorrow when they travel to meet No. 4 Auburn and No. 10 Florida. In addition to that headlining attraction, several Sun Devil swimmers who did not make the road trip will be on display in Tempe at the Sun Devil Invitational, held at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center at 9:00 a.m. MST. Also taking to the water will be athletes from St. John's University, University of Missouri, University of Wyoming, College of Saint Benedict and Lake Forest College.
