Four Sun Devil Athletes Awarded Pac-10 Postgraduate Scholarships

TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona State senior Carolyn Adel, Ed Carter, Alex Osterrieth and Kristine Sand are among 38 student-athletes who have been awarded postgraduate scholarships by the Pac-10 Conference. Each recipient, selected by their respective institution, will receive a grant in the amount of $3,000.

To be eligible for a Pac-10 postgraduate scholarship a student-athlete must have an overall grade point average of 3.00 or its equivalent, be in his or her final season of intercollegiate athletics eligibility, have performed with distinction as a member of the varsity team, intend to continue academic work beyond the baccalaureate degree as a full time graduate student and have behaved both on and off the field in a manner that has brought credit to the student-athlete, the institution and intercollegiate athletics. Participation in campus and community service activities and demonstrate of leadership qualities also will be taken into consideration.

Adel concluded her senior season on the ASU women's swimming team with a third consecutive selection to the Pac-10 All-Academic Team. The accounting major is also a two-time Academic All-American honoree by the College Swimming Coaches Association, which will release its list of 1999-2000 honorees this summer. In the pool, Adel earned All-America distinction in the 400 individual medley all four years of her Sun Devil career, and won a bronze medal in the same event at the 1999 Pan American Games while competing for her native Suriname.

Carter, a men's tennis player from Columbus, Ohio who majored in liberal arts, earned his third consecutive selection to the GTE Region VIII Academic All-American Team in 1999-2000. He is also a three-time Pac-10 All-Academic honoree and was recently awarded a Pac-10 Medal for his scholastic and athletic achievement. Carter's finest season on the court came in 1998-99, when he was a doubles All-American, finished with a No. 9 ranking and compiled a 22-17 singles record.

Carter's doubles teammate this past season was Osterrieth, a business major from Westerham, Kent, England. In 1999-2000 he compiled a 19-14 dual meet record, earned First Team All-Pac-10 honors and advanced to the NCAA Championships as an individual. Osterrieth also garnered his third straight conference All-Academic nod.

Another three-time Pac-10 All-Academic honoree is Sand, who earned her bachelor's degree in marketing. The Oslo, Norway native enjoyed her most productive season for the Sun Devil women's basketball team in 1999-2000, averaging a career high 10.4 points and 4.5 rebounds.
