May 11, 2000

Arizona State's Casey Myers (Casa Grande) and Jeff Phelps (Yuma) were 2000 GTE/CoSIDA District VIII All-Academic baseball team selections as announced Thursday.

Myers, a national player of the year candidate, is a junior majoring in mathematics. The Arizona native is batting at a .417 clip with 11 homeruns and a team-leading 75 RBI. He was a GTE Academic All-American last year.

Phelps, who's .366 batting average is second on the team, is a junior majoring in communications. The Arizona native has 14 doubles and 67 hits on the year.

Three schools placed two players each on the District VIII team, including Arizona State. The Sun Devils led all Pac-10 schools with two selections as well.

The 2000 team represents four conferences, with four student athletes recognized from the West Coast Conference, three from the Pac-10, two from the Western Athletic Conference and one from the Big West.

The team was voted on by CoSIDA members from within District VIII. The district selections will be placed on the national ballot and the 2000 GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-America baseball team will be announced June 6.
