Wrestling (Lee Roy Smith/8th Year): Finished in a tie for 16th at the NCAA Championships... seven wrestlers qualified for the NCAA Championships with two earning All-America honors - juniors Quinn Foster (eighth place at 149 pounds) and Steve Blackford (third at 165 pounds)... Blackford became the 21st Sun Devil to earn at least two All-America certificates in his career... other NCAA qualifiers included senior Michael Kawamura (125 pounds), sophomores David Douglas (141), Curtis Owen (174) and Erik Gladish (197) and redshirt freshman Kellan Fluckiger (heavyweight)... Foster and Blackford won Pac-10 Conference titles, while Kawamura earned runner-up honors at the conference meet... ASU finished second at the Pac-10 Championships with a total of nine placewinners... Douglas, Gladish and Fluckiger each garnered third-place showings at Pac-10s, while Fluckiger was the only non-seeded wrestler at the conference meet to earn a berth at the NCAA Championships... Blackford won Pac-10 Wrestler of the Year honors, becoming the 10th Sun Devil to earn that distinction... ASU posted a 10-8 overall dual record and a 4-0 Pac-10 mark... Blackford paced the team with a 43-4 record, which ties him for second on the ASU single-season chart... his record also marked his third consecutive season with at least 30 wins and moved him into a tie for 15th in career victories at ASU with 103... Blackford defeated defending NCAA champion Kirk White of Boise State on three occasions including a 13-1 victory at the NWCA All-Star Classic... he won three tournaments in the preseason (California Open, Las Vegas Invitational and Reno Tournament of Champions) and finished second in the other two... senior Mark Perryman (Cowboy Open, 141 pounds) and senior Randy Leydecker (California Open, heavyweight) also won tournament titles for ASU... Foster led the team with 13 wins by fall and now has 26 in his career which ranks sixth on the ASU career list... he posted the first 30-win season of his career with a 34-11 mark... ASU finished sixth at the Cliff Keen/NWCA National Duals, the only unseeded team to place at that prestigious event... climbed from 17th to 13th in the national rankings after knocking off two ranked opponents at the National Duals... remained at No. 13 for the rest of the season... had four wrestlers ranked in the individual polls all season (Kawamura, Douglas, Foster and Blackford)... sophomore Eric Larkin, the 1999 Pac-10 Champion and All-American at 133 pounds, redshirted the 1999-2000 season in order to train for the 2000 U.S. Olympic Trials... had five wrestlers named to the Pac-10 All-Academic team in first-team selections Perryman and senior Arturo Anaya and second-teamers sophomore Daniel Hyman and Leydecker.
