Sun Devil Swimming Concludes Texas Invitational

Dec. 3, 2000

AUSTIN, Texas -- Among a 12-team men's field that included six other top-25 teams, and a 13-team women's field that included eight other ranked squads, the No. 12 Arizona State men's swimming team finished eighth while the 16th-ranked women finished 11th as the three-day Texas Invitational closed Sunday at the Joe Jamail Swimming Center in Austin, Texas.

The ASU men finished with 210 points, well shy of the meet-winning 751 points produced by the host school, No. 1 Texas. The women gathered 128.5 points and were edged out of ninth-place by No. 18 Minnesota, which finished with 130 points. No. 2 UCLA won the meet on the women's side with 553.5 points.

In the final day of competition, the men were bolstered by senior All-American Scott VonSchoff's fourth-place showing in the 100 freestyle. Just one day after earning the 200 free crown in personal-record time, VonSchoff swam the 100 in 44.18, his fastest time of the season. Junior All-American Bo West also made a strong showing in the 100 free, garnering 13th-place in 45.34.

Senior All-American Otto Hinks turned in his fastest 200 breaststroke of the season, finishing 11th in 2:03.59. Freshmen Nick Brunelli and Rich Jacobs continued to impress in their young collegiate careers. Brunelli finished 13th in the 200 backstroke (1:50.19) while Jacobs completed the 200 fly in a personal-best time of 1:51.81 for 18th-place.

The lone Sun Devil in the event, junior Mike Dowling grabbed 13th-place in the 1650 free in 15:57.85.

Senior All-American Lauren Morelli notched the best individual finish of the day for the women, taking 12th-place in the 200 back in 2:01.23, her best time of the season. Sophomore Claire Hedenskog wrapped up a fine meet with a 13th-place finish in the 100 free in 51.22.

In the 1650 free, junior Amanda Stanford posted a time of 17:04.54 for 13th place. Junior All-American Riley Mants was the Sun Devils' other individual point-scorer Sunday, taking 15th in the 200 breast in 2:19.56.

The Sun Devils' men's and women's swimming teams will get a little recovery time with an off-weekend immediately upcoming. However, both squads will be joined by ASU's diving teams Saturday, Dec. 16, when Washington and Northwestern travel to face the Sun Devils at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center in Tempe.
