LOS ANGELES -- Arizona State's No. 13 men's swimming & diving team lost for the first time (1-1) this season 140-103 at No. 6 USC in a two-day meet at the McDonald's Swim Stadium in Los Angeles Friday and Saturday.
In the swimming portion of the meet Friday, senior All-American Scott VonSchoff (Napa, Calif.) was the bright spot for ASU, winning the 100 yard freestyle in 45.13 and the 200 yard free in 1:39.20. Von Schoff also anchored the victorious 400 yard free relay that bested USC 3:01.77 to 3:02.87. The only other first-place points for the Sun Devils were gathered by the 400 yard medley relay team, which won in a time of 3:21.26.
The tough Trojan team was led by freshman Erik Vendt, who won the 1000 yard free (9:13.13), 200 yard backstroke (1:49.38) and 200 yard breaststroke (2:05.73). Tamas Kerakjarto won two events for USC, knocking off freshman Rich Jacobs (Seattle, Wash.) in the 200 yard individual medley 1:51.12 to 1:52.89, and being first to the wall in the 200 yard butterfly in 1:49.94.
Other than Jacobs, senior All-American Otto Hinks (Ottawa, Ontario) and junior All-American Simon MacDonald (Amprior, Ontario) were the only other ASU individuals to capture second in their event. Hinks, ASU record holder in the 100 breast, was second in the 200 in 2:07.46. MacDonald finished runner-up in the 50 yard free in 21.08, with USC's Gabe Woodward taking first in 20.90.
When ASU's divers entered the competition Saturday, the Sun Devils already trailed 125-80. Senior All-American Marc Briggs (Madera, Calif.) won the 1-meter springboard with a total score of 296.25. Freshman Gordon Blukis (Cuppertino, Calif.) finished third in that event at 245.65, but led the way for ASU with a second-place finish in the 3-meter (278.70). Despite their efforts, the Trojan advantage proved too large, and the Sun Devils fell by 37 points.
