Former Sun Devil Sanchez is Golden at Pan American Games

TEMPE, Ariz. - Francisco Sanchez, a 1999 Arizona State graduate, will carry a gold medal back to his native Venezuela after winning the 100 meter butterfly at the XIII Pan American games in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Sanchez, ASU's school record holder in the 100 butterfly, broke a Pan Am Games record on Tuesday with his time of 53.33.

The 100 fly was a Sun Devil-spangled event, as current Arizona State senior Pablo Abal and his former teammate Roberto Delgado were also amongst the 16-man field. The Argentinian Abal placed eighth at 55.27, while Delgado, swimming for Ecuador, finished 15th in a time of 56.89. Sanchez, a 1996 Olympian, will return to action today in the 100 meter freestyle. He is also slated to compete in Thursday's 4x100 freestyle relay and the 50 free on Friday.

In women's action on Tuesday, Sun Devil senior Carolyn Adel placed fifth in the 200 freestyle at 2:04.20. The native of Suriname, who captured bronze in Monday's 400 individual medley, will resume competition on Friday in the 200 IM.
