Adel Earns Bronze at Pan American Games

TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona State swimmer Carolyn Adel captured the bronze medal in 400 meter individual medley competition Monday at the XIII Pan American Games in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

Adel , a native of Suriname, clocked in at 4:50.41, behind champion Joanne Malar (4:38.46) and American silver medalist Martha Bowen (4:49.22). The ASU senior greatly improved her time after recording the seventh-fastest mark in the morning preliminary heat (4:57.74).

Adel, a 1996 Olympian, has already qualified for the finals of tonight's 200 meter freestyle race, finishing the prelims in 2:07.85. Meanwhile former Sun Devil Francisco Sanchez will be pitted against Arizona State senior Pablo Abal in the 100 butterfly tonight. Sanchez was this morning's fastest qualifier at 53.63 while Abal touched the wall in 55.25.
