1998-99 ASU Swimming Year in Review

Men
Recorded a 5-4 dual meet record...finished 16th at the NCAA Championships in Indianapolis...the Sun Devils finished fifth at the Pac-10 Championships...senior Francisco Sanchez set a Pac-10 meet record in winning the 100 freestyle (42.86)...at the NCAA's, Sanchez earned All-American honors as he tied for seventh in the 50 free (19.70)...he achieved honorable mention status in the 100 free as well... Sanchez set a school record in the 100 fly (46.96) at the Pac-10 meet...junior Pablo Abal earned honorable mention in the 200 backstroke...freshman Bo West earned honorable mention in the 200 freestyle...the 200 free relay team of Abal, sophomore Scott VonSchoff, freshman Simon MacDonald and Sanchez earned All-America honors, placing eighth at the NCAA's...also earning honorable mention recognition as relays were the 400 medley (Abal, sophomore Adam Guzauskas, MacDonald and VonSchoff), 200 medley (Abal, Guzauskas, Sanchez and MacDonald), 800 freestyle (VonSchoff, West, MacDonald and junior Greg Plank) and 400 freestyle (Sanchez, VonSchoff, MacDonald West)...sophomore Travis Leyenhorst set the school record in the 100 breast (54.64)...Alan Sonkin qualified for the NCAA Championships after placing third in the three-meter and fourth in the platform at the NCAA Zone E Diving Championships in Tempe...Sonkin was the first ASU male diver to qualify for the NCAA's since 1982...at the Pac-10's Sonkin placed third in the platform...Abal and senior Guillermo Diaz De Leon earned First Team Pac-10 All-Academic honors...junior Andrey Trinidad and sophomore Christian Jacobsen earned Second Team honors.

Women
Recorded a 6-5-1 dual meet record...finished 23rd at the NCAA Championships in Athens, Georgia...placed sixth at the Pac-10 Championships...freshman Riley Mants took fourth in the 200 breast (2:12.47) and 11th in the 100 breast (1:02.44) at the NCAA's...Mants earned All-America honors for the 200 and honorable mention recognition in the 100...junior Carolyn Adel placed ninth (honorable mention) in the 400 individual medley (4:16.07)...800 freestyle relay team (Adel, junior Casey Murphy, senior Tiffany Houser and freshman Sarah Baham) earned honorable mention...sophomore Patricia Malatesta qualified for the NCAA Championships after her performance at the NCAA Zone E Diving Championships where she placed third in the platform...Mants notched a second-place finish at the Pac-10's in the 200 breast with her time of 2:12.87...Mants also placed fifth in the 100 breast (1:02.72)...Adel finished fifth in the 400 IM (4:20.30)...the ASU relay teams placed fifth in the 400 free (3:27.14), 800 free (7:27.91) and 400 medley (3:45.87)...Murphy, an All-American, represented ASU at the third annual NCAA Leadership conference in Lake Buena Vista, Fla....Senior Camilla Johansson set the school record in the 200 backstroke (1:58.22)...Baham established a school record in the 100 fly (54.76)...the 400 medley relay team of Johansson, Mants, Baham and and Adel set the school mark (3:4.01)...several Sun Devil swimmers earned Second Team Pac-10 All-Academic honors including junior Sarah Adams, Adel, junior Mandy Contreras, Houser, Johansson and junior Alyson Miller...honorable mentions were given to junior Amanda Clegg, junior Stephanie Elwonger and sophomores Anna Ericson, Angie Pomella, Anne Rogalla and Kelli Sasada.
