TEMPE, Ariz.--The football game between Arizona State University and Stanford University in 1998, originally scheduled for Saturday, October 17, has been moved to Thursday, October 22 at Sun Devil Stadium, Director of Athletics Kevin White announced Monday. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. (MST).
The move was made for several reasons, one of which was to accommodate a national cable telecast by Fox Sports Network (channel 34 locally). The telecast will reach approximately 60 million homes nationwide.
"This move is a tremendous boost for our football program," says White. "It will expose our program to the entire nation while giving our coaching staff an advantage in preparation."
The move also gives ASU head coach Bruce Snyder 12 days between the Notre Dame (Oct. 10) game and the Stanford (Oct. 22) and nine days between the Stanford (Oct. 22) and Washington State (Oct. 31) game to prepare.
"This is a coaches dream," says Snyder, who is entering his seventh season at ASU. "This gives us two open weekends (the 17th and the 24th) and allows additional days for our student-athletes to recover for the Stanford and Washington State games. It also gives our coaching staff additional time to prepare, not to mention the national exposure for recognition and recruiting."
Last year's ASU at Stanford football game (a 31-14 Sun Devil victory on Oct. 18) was not televised.
This is the second ASU game to be selected for television in 1998. The Sun Devil's Sept. 12 date at Brigham Young will be televised by espn2.
