TEMPE, Ariz. -- The Arizona State men's tennis team (1-3, 0-2 Pac-10) notched its first dual win of the 1998 season by knocking off the University of Utah (4-2, 0-0 WAC), 6-1 this afternoon at the Whiteman Tennis Center.
The Sun Devils continued their strong doubles play, sweeping the Utes at all three spots to take the first point of the dual. Arizona State has not lost a doubles point in any of their four duals this year.
The best doubles match occurred at No. 1, where ASU's tandem of Ed Carter and Tim Hammond were extended into the tie breaker before pulling it out 9-8 (6). The duo of Peter Dani and Casey Was clinched the doubles point for ASU at No. 3 by defeating Utah's Paul McPherson and Ryan Snow 8-4.
In singles action, ASU took all but one match with junior Tim Hammond clinching the dual at No. 5 singles by defeating Utah's Ryan Snow 6-4, 6-4. At ASU's No. 1 slot, junior Gustavo Marcaccio improved his overall record to 14-6 with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Paul McPherson. The sole Utah win came at No. 3 singles where Philippe Rodrigue came back from a set down to defeat ASU's Ed Carter 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Arizona State will next play host to the UTEP Miners on Saturday, February 14, at 1:30 p.m.
