Swimmers to Participate in NCAA Leadership Conference

April 6, 1999

TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona State junior all-America swimmer Casey Murphy will be one of 300 student-athletes participating in the third annual NCAA Leadership Conference, the NCAA announced on Tuesday.

The conference will take place May 31 through June 4 at Disney's Wide World of Sports and Coronado Springs Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Calif.

"Casey is a very hardworking and very dedicated person," says ASU swimming coach Mike Chasson. "Casey is a very good racer and a great competitor."

Student-athletes were nominated from NCAA member institutions that participate in the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program. The mission of the NCAA Leadership Conference is to prepare a diverse group of student-athletes to take an active leadership role on their campuses and in their communities. It provides NCAA student-athletes the opportunity to discuss and explore critical issues facing their peers, as well as giving them an opportunity to enhance their leadership skills, and to promote better communication among student-athletes, coaches, administrators, faculty and communities.

Murphy recently helped the Sun Devils to a 23rd place finish at the NCAA Championships in Athens, Ga., where she took 15th place in the 1650 free.

Murphy serves on the ASU Student-Athlete Advisory Council and is the chair of the diversity committee on that council. Murphy is also a member of the Intercollegiate Athletics Board at ASU and is serving on the ASU athletics re-certification committee. Murphy also represented ASU at a Pacific-10 forum in San Francisco this past November, which addressed issues affecting Pac-10 student athletes.
