LOS ANGELES - The No. 1 ranked UCLA men's tennis team avenged an earlier season loss Friday, defeating No. 13 Arizona State University 5-2 at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The Bruins, whose only loss of the season was a 3-4 defeat at Arizona State on Jan. 30, improve to 14-1 overall, 3-1 in Pac-10 Conference action. Arizona State falls to 8-2 overall and 2-2 in conference action.
UCLA moved out to an early lead following the doubles competition as the Bruins won the one point awarded for doubles, with victories on court Nos. 2 and 3. ASU however, put the pressure on UCLA as the team of Jeff Williams/Ed Carter upset the seventh-ranked team in the country Jason Cook/Brandon Kramer 8-6 on court No. 1. UCLA equaled the doubles competition on court No. 3, as Chris Sands/Martin Rozpedski knocked off the Sun Devil's Tim Hammond/Casey Was 8-5. The Bruins' No. 2 team of Jean-Noel Grinda/Jong-Min Lee got the decisive win over ASU's Gustavo Marcaccio/Alex Osterrieth 8-4, giving UCLA a 1-0 lead heading into singles action.
ASU equaled the score at one apiece as, on court No. 6, Tim Hammond defeated Chris Sands 6-4, 6-0. Next to finish was court No. 2, where UCLA's Zack Fleishman topped Gustavo Marcaccio 6-3, 6-3. Again, however, ASU was able to keep the score close as, on court No. 4, ASU's Ed Carter defeated Brandon Kramer in straight sets 6-4, 7-6(4). With the score tied at 2-2, the Bruins took control. After losing to Matt Klinger earlier this season in Tempe, UCLA's Jong-Min Lee was able to pull out the victory this time, defeating Klinger in a three-set battle 6-3, 2-6, 6-3. Ahead 3-2, the Bruins clinched the match on court No. 4, where Jason Cook, who had also previously lost to Alex Osterrieth in their earlier meeting, held on to defeat him today, winning 7-6(6), 6-4. UCLA had already won the dual match 4-2, when Jean-Noel Grinda downed ASU's Jeff Williams 7-5, 7-6(12) in a hard fought battle on court No. 1.
The Bruins continue their eight-match homestand tomorrow, Saturday, March 13, hosting the University of Arizona at Noon at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
