Racing With the Devils: Jen Beckberger

Sept. 17, 2008

Yet another academic year has begun here in Tempe. I can't believe it's my senior year already. I love being a part of this team. When I graduated high school, the timing was not right and I did not have the option to enter ASU. As a result, I did a fifth year of high school and, in an exciting moment, was offered a chance to swim for the Sun Devils. My time here has passed in the blink of an eye.

We are three weeks into training and getting our butts kicked. Don't get me wrong, it's great and I love it. It is difficult for the team to walk today because of our leg-squat day in weight training on Monday. This week the team starts lifting instead of doing a dry-land circuit. I prefer the lifting because it focuses more on my power and less on my aerobic strength.

Starting this year does not seem much different to me than the previous three years. It is very sad, however, to think this is my last year competing for the Sun Devils. It will be hard to leave this group of great people, but I don't want to talk about that now.

I have learned a lot over the past three years at Arizona State University and with this team. I have grown as a person in ways I never thought about as a high school swimmer. There is no way to replace the things that I have learned from the coaches and my teammates. I have made some amazing friends over the past years that I will keep with me for the rest of my life.

So far it has been awesome and I can't wait to start competing this year, especially after being the alternate for the Olympics...

It's my time now!!

Right now I am focused on how much my back and legs hurt from weights and how I have to go lift again in a few minutes...oh jeepers :).

Until next time,
Jen
