Racing with the Devils: Caitlin Andrew

Jan. 22, 2008

Hey Devil Fans!

I never thought I would appreciate "cold" Arizona weather as much as I do now. Our men's and women's teams traveled to Minnesota this past weekend to swim against the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. It was a short trip but long enough to freeze in the -2º F weather (as the high temperature). We arrived Friday evening with just enough time to go to the Mall of America for dinner. Jen Beckberger and I had our own agenda, riding ALL of the rides. We were 8 year olds, running around the park making sure we had time to ride everything. We left the park in time to head to the hotel and go to bed.

We had a wake up swim the next morning where we braved the -10ºF on our short 100 yard trip from the hotel to the pool, located on the other side of the parking lot. The fun part was walking back to the hotel with wet hair that froze two steps out the door.

We swam Minnesota that afternoon. We started out strong, placing 1st and 3rd in the relay and our distance girls swam better than expected. Christine managed to do a best time in the 1000 free by 5 seconds. We also had great swims from our backstrokers, butterfliers, and breastrokers. Our shorter freestyle events didn't go as well as we had hoped and that put us too many points short of a victory.

I think my favorite part of meets is the last relay. No matter how the meet turns out, Jen (Beckberger), Lindsey (Brown), Jess (Perazzo) and I love to end the meet on a high note. Even if we are all having a bad meet or tired by the last relay, we get pumped for this event. It is always a contest between Jen and me to see who can have the fastest split, and unfortunately she usually beats me!

Oh, and on a side note my team managed to come in 3rd place from our team competition over Christmas break.

Go Devils!
