Pac-10 Brackets (pdf)
CORVALLIS, Ore. - The brackets for the 2011 Pac-10 Wrestling Championships were released today with four members of the Arizona State University wrestling team earning a Top 4 seed in their respective weight classes for the event that will take place on Sunday inside Gill Coliseum in Corvallis, Ore. Both Anthony Robles (125) and Levi Cooper (285) were selected as the No. 1 seeds at their weight classes while the duo of Bubba Jenkins (157) and Jake Meredith (184) earned the No. 2 seeds in their weights.
Here is a look at who each Sun Devil will face in their first match of the tournament, which will be the quarterfinals of each bracket except for heavyweight where Cooper received a bye into the semifinals:
125: #1 Anthony Robles will face Tyler Iwamura (CS Bakersfield) in the quarterfinals. The two met in a dual match earlier this season with Robles winning a 19-3 technical fall in Tempe. The three points Iwamura scored are the second-most of any of Robles' opponents this year (Robles won an 8-4 decision).
133: Kalin Goodsite is unseeded and will face #3 Garrett Drucker (Oregon State) to open the tournament. The two met in the final weekend of the season (two weeks ago) with Drucker taking an 11-7 decision in Corvallis.
141: Josh Sandoval is unseeded and will face #4 Elijah Nacita (CS Bakersfield) in the quarterfinals. Competing in his third different weight class, Sandoval has not faced Nacita in either of his two matches at this weight.
149: Carlos Castro is unseeded and will take on #3 Filip Novachkov (Cal Poly). Wrestling at his third weight of the season, Castro has only faced two foes at 149 pounds this year, neither of which is his first round opponent.
157: #2 Bubba Jenkins' return to the mat since an injury sidelined him in mid-January will see him face Alex Elder (Oregon State) in the quarterfinals. The duo did meet once this season as Jenkins scored an 11-3 major decision over Elder in the first round of the Las Vegas Invitational.
165: Kyle DeBerry is unseeded and will be competing in his first match of the season after winning a wrestle-off to earn the starting spot for ASU this weekend. DeBerry will take on #3 Jon Brascetta (Oregon State) in the quarterfinals.
174: Eric Starks is unseeded after being out of action since mid-January and drew #2 Nick Amuchastegui (Stanford) in the quarterfinals. The two did not face one another this season.
184: #2 Jake Meredith will take on Kelan Bragg (Cal Poly) in the quarterfinals. Meredith and Bragg met once this season in a dual in Tempe with Meredith pinning his Mustang opponent in 2:13.
197: Luke Macchiaroli is unseeded and drew #4 Ryan Smith (Cal Poly) in the quarterfinals. Macchiaroli dropped a 5-2 decision to Smith in a dual held in Tempe this season.
285: #1 Levi Cooper, on the basis of a random computer draw, received a bye in the first round and will wrestle his first match in the semifinals. There, he will face the winner of the quarterfinal match pitting No. 4 T.J. Felix (Boise State) and Dylan Rush (Stanford). Cooper defeated both men in their only meetings this season, including a 7-2 decision over Felix in the quarterfinals of the Reno Tournament of Champions and a 2-1 tb decision over Rush in a dual at Stanford in the final match of the season.
The tournament gets underway at 11 a.m. PT (noon in Arizona) and can be viewed via a live web cast on the Oregon State web site, OSUBeavers.com.
