Player Bio: Mike Williams



ASU: Looks to cement himself in the starting tailback role in his final season in Tempe...a complete running back...versatile athlete who is comfortable with the Sun Devil offense...a team leader...recognized as a Hard Hat Player for his work in ASU's winter strength and conditioning program.

2002: Played in all 14 games, starting seven...had 124 carries for 482 yards (3.9 avg.) and seven touchdowns...caught 15 passes for 67 yards and one touchdown...had one kickoff return for 11 yards...longest carry of the season was a 34-yard touchdown at Nebraska...exploded at Arizona with 40 carries for 162 yards and four touchdowns, earning him Player of the Game honors...the 40 attempts and four rushing TDs were single-game highs for the Pac-10 in 2002...40 rushing attempts puts him second all-time at ASU for rushing attempts in a game...caught a touchdown pass in the Holiday Bowl...earned Academic All-Pac-10 First-Team honors for the second straight year, one of just 10 players in the league to earn all-academic honors multiple times.

2001: Played in all 11 games, starting four...first-team Pac-10 All-Academic and Verizon District All-Academic selection...posted 38 rushes for 188 yards (4.9 avg.) and three touchdowns...had season-long 59-yard run vs. UCLA...had two touchdowns at home against Louisiana-Lafayette...had 10 receptions for 89 yards...added a 32-yard reception against San Diego State...finished season second on team and seventh in the Pac-10 in kickoff returns with 14 for 328 yards (23.4 avg.)...had a season-long 49-yard return versus San Jose State...turned in six kickoff returns for 120 yards at USC...that performance tied him for second in the ASU record books for kickoff returns in a game and fifth for kickoff return yardage in a game...finished the season with 605 all-purpose yards. 2000: Played in all 12 games, starting three at tailback...finished second on team in rushing with 121 carries for 514 yards...scored five touchdowns on the ground...his 30 points were good for fifth on team in scoring...also caught one pass for six yards...made his collegiate debut with 10 carries for 16 yards in ASU's season opener at San Diego State...had a break-out effort in the second game of the season with 33 carries for 148 yards and one touchdown vs. Colorado State...became the first true freshman to top the century mark since Mario Bates in 1991...had 16 carries for 68 yards vs. Utah State...carried the ball 10 times for 97 yards and two touchdowns at UCLA...TD runs vs. the Bruins were from five and 39 yards out...also added only reception of the season for six yards vs. UCLA...racked up 70 yards on eight carries vs. Oregon, including a season-long 59-yard run for a touchdown...was one of six true freshmen to play in 2000.

HIGH SCHOOL: A 2000 graduate of Mayfair High School...earned honorable mention All-America honors by USA Today...ranked as the 98th-best player in the nation by the Sporting News...received nine votes (the most of any ASU recruit in '99) in the Long Beach Press-Telegram's "Best In The West" first-team listing... listed as the No. 21 player in the Farwest by SuperPrep Magazine...made first-team with nine out of 15 votes by the Orange County Register...a member of the Tacoma News Tribune's "Western 100" listing... a first-team player in the Las Vegas Sun's Super 11...a PrepStar Top 100 Dream Team player as the No. 4 running back in the nation...also made the Super 30 All-Western Region team by PrepStar and was its Western Region MVP on offense...listed as the No. 3 player on the Western Region Super 30 by SportsLine/PrepStar...named to PrepStar Magazine preseason Top 100 Dream Team...listed by PrepStar as the No. 1 running back in the West... listed as the No. 25 running back in the nation by SuperPrep Magazine in its "All-America 308" listing...all-city, All-Suburban League, all-state and All-American in 1999...All-South Coast first-team in 1999...Lakewood Player of the Year in 1999...Long Beach Press-Telegram Player of the Year in 1999...one of the best two-way players from the state of California...earned all-league as a sophomore, junior and senior and all-area as a junior and senior...rushed for 2,330 yards and 45 touchdowns as a senior...averaged 8.2 yards per touch...also scored six more touchdowns on kickoff, punt and interception returns...rushed for 1,500 yards and 25 touchdowns as a junior...also has great hands (caught 29 passes as a junior)...intercepted six passes on defense...had 1,400 yards rushing as a freshman, including 24 touchdowns...had 1,500 yards and 26 touchdowns as a sophomore...holds the school single-game record of seven touchdowns in one game...vs. Norwalk High as a senior, he rushed for five touchdowns on 14 carries for 302 yards in the first half and did not play in the second half...played at Mayfair High School with former ASU fullback Darrel Turner...carried a 3.7 grade-point average...coach Mike Fitch said "Mike is very coachable and has a knack for finding the football. Very coachable, a `no sir, yes sir' kind of guy. He possesses all the intangibles that all the great ones have"...lettered four times each in football and track and field , twice in basketball and once in baseball...captained the football team as a junior and senior, captained the basketball team twice and the track and field team six times.

PERSONAL: Majoring in justice studies...father is Michael Williams and mother is Sherron Woods...has a younger brother, Terry...cousins, Damon Briceson and Christopher Owens, played football at Colorado and Navy, respectively...born December 7, 1981 in Orange County, Calif.
