Championship Notes (Day 1)
? Only four weight classes saw all four top seeds move through to the semifinals. Those weights included 141, 165, 174 and heavyweight.
? At the conclusion of the first session, all 10 of the No. 1 seeded wrestlers advanced to the semifinals with eight of the 10 second-seeded competitors advancing to the final four.
? The heavyweight bracket also can be considered the `Newcomers Bracket.' Of the 10 entrants into the tournament, only Stanford's Shawn Ritzenthaler has competed in a Pac-10 Championship meet prior to this year. Ritzenthaler went 0-2 at heavyweight a year ago. Unofficially, Portland State's Eric Mustoe 4-0 win over Oregon's Chris Dearman in the championship pigtail was the first win in a conference tournament for any of the 10 competitors.
? Speaking of heavyweights and first wins, Cal State Fullerton's Matthew Fitu defeated Stanford's Shawn Ritzenthaler, 14-8, for his first victory of the season.
? Three seeded wrestlers went 0-2 in the tournament and were bounced from the competition at the end of the consolation first round. Those competitors included: No. 4 Eddie Dahlen of Portland State at 149, No. 6 Bryan Travers of Cal State Bakersfield at 174 and No. 6 Shawn Ritzenthaler of Stanford at heavyweight.
? Following the consolation quarterfinals, six seeded wrestlers also fell from the tournament. Those competitors included: No. 3 Mike Simpson of Arizona State (133), No. 6 Kyle Larson of Oregon State (141), No. 5 Mike Font of UC Davis (165), No. 5 Jon Carlisle of Boise State (174), No. 5 Jon Garfinkel of Stanford (184) and No. 6 Jake Leair of Oregon (197).
? No. 3 seed Mike Simpson of Arizona State was the first defending champion to be bounced from the tournament following his 5-0 loss to Cal State Bakersfield's No. 2 Matt Sanchez. Simpson went 1-2 in the tournament that he won last year.
? Defending Champion Meets Defending Champion: No. 3 Nick Frost of Arizona State, the defending 165-pound champion of a year ago, advanced to the finals at 184 and will face the defending 184 champion in No. 4 Ryan Halsey, who pinned No. 1 Dan Pitsch of Oregon State.
? Jeremiah Jarvis of UC Davis, the defending champion at 157 and the No. 5 seed this year, dropped his semifinal bout to No. 1 and undefeated Matt Gentry of Stanford to end his potential title defense. Jarvis will now face No. 6 Dustin Vance of Cal State Fullerton in the consolation semifinals Monday morning.
