This Week
Albeit from different locations, Arizona State's 10th-ranked women's swimming and diving team will compete in the 2002 Pac-10 Championships, Thursday, February 28 through Saturday, March 2. The swimming portion of the meet is being held in Long Beach, Calif., while both the men's and women's diving championships will be held in Tucson, Ariz. The women's swimming and diving team finished the dual season with a 6-4 overall record, 3-3 vs. Pac-10 opponents. ASU's losses were all to national top-10 teams, Stanford, California, Texas and Arizona. In addition to its win over Washington, the Sun Devil women swept UCLA and USC for the first time since 1992.

The Polls
The College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) releases national rankings on a bi-weekly basis. Having debuted at No. 13 in the polls (Nov. 1), in the Jan. 31 rankings the women dropped from seventh to 10th. A final dual season poll was set to be released Feb. 21, but has not been posted. A complete list of the Jan. 31 rankings appears on Page 2 of this release. For more info, access www.cscaa.org.

The Field
The field for the Pac-10 Championships is as follows (based on Jan. 31 rankings): No. 1 Stanford, No. 4 California, No. 7 Arizona, No. 9 USC, No. 10 Arizona State, No. 11 UCLA and unranked Oregon State, Washington and Washington State (Oregon does not have a swimming and diving team).

Pac-10 Conference Championship Notes
While finishing no worse than 29th nationally over that span, Arizona State's women's swimming and diving team has come away from the Pac-10 Championships with sixth-place finishes each of the last six seasons. This year they hope to move up, but it won't be easy in the Conference of Champions. Over the past 10 seasons the Pac-10 has accounted for an average of 2.2 top-five NCAA finishes a year. Highlighting that average is Stanford, with six national crowns and three runner-up finishes over that span. Perhaps even more impressive, only twice over the last 10 seasons has the Pac-10 not claimed four of the top 10 spots at the NCAA Championships. This will be the 16th time ASU participates in the Pac-10 Championships. The last time ASU placed better than sixth in the conference meet was 1995, when the Sun Devils finished fourth. ASU's best all-time finish was second in 1994. It has never finished third. It has five fourth-place finishes and three fifth-place finishes.

ASU, Last Time In The Pool
For the eighth straight time, ASU's women's swimming and diving team fell to Arizona, losing 199-101, while the ASU men triumphed 171.5-128.5. Competing without standout ?gnes Kov?cs, the only Sun Devils to earn first-place finishes were swimmer Sarah Baham and diver Natalie Burgess. Baham won the 100 fly in 55.70 and placed runner-up in the 200 fly in 2:00.54. Burgess placed first in the 3-meter (294.45) and runner-up in the 1-meter (262.28) springboards. Both Baham and Burgess were among the seven seniors making their final home appearances for ASU women's swimming and diving.

Up Next For The Sun Devils
The ASU men's swimming team will compete in their 2002 Pac-10 Championships, March 7-9 in Long Beach, Calif. Qualifying ASU divers (men and women) will compete at the Zone E Diving Championships in Stanford, Calif., March 14-16. For those who qualify, the women's NCAA Championships (swimming and diving) are March 21-23 in College Station, Texas. The men's NCAA Championships (swimming and diving) are March 28-30 in Athens, Ga.
