The scene at Phoenix Municipal Stadium during the contest with Arizona on Monday, April 13.

PHOENIX – No. 23 Sun Devil Baseball dropped its Monday night game against Arizona, 5-3, in eleven innings on Monday evening at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

Arizona State (26-12) fell behind early as the Wildcats hit three solo home runs in the first three innings, but the Sun Devils were able to battle back and tie the game up in the eighth on a two-run home run from Nu’u Contrades. Strong pitching performances pushed the game into extra innings, but a tough eleventh inning put Arizona State on the receiving end of a two-run push by the Wildcats.

Outside of the eleventh, the Sun Devil bullpen was a bright spot, as Easton Barrett, Alex Overbay, Eli Buxton, Sean Fitzpatrick, Derek Schaefer, and Finn Edwards combined for 6.2 scoreless frames. Fitzpatrick and Schaefer each struck out the side in the eighth and ninth innings, respectively, and Schaefer induced a double play in the tenth to keep the game tied.

On the flip side, the potent Sun Devil offense went quiet when it was needed the most, hitting a low .137 (7-for-37) over the course of the game, including a paltry 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position in the loss.

The lone hit with a runner in scoring position came on Contrades’ home run. In four separate innings, Arizona State had a runner on third base and failed to score in any of them. In three of those innings, there were runners on second and third. In the seventh, the two baserunners came with no outs, and in the eleventh, with only one out.

Turning point
After tying the game at 3-3 on Contrades’ two-run home run with no outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Sun Devils had numerous chances to win the game but went 3.1 innings following the homer without recording a hit and were silenced by Arizona closer Garrett Hicks, who retired Landon Hairston twice when he represented the game-winning at-bat in the ninth and eleventh. Hicks had 3.0 innings of scoreless work to earn the win.

Big moment
No player in the country has swung the bat better than Landon Hairston this season, as he leads the nation with his 23 homers. ASU got exactly what it wanted in both the ninth and eleventh innings as the Wildcats chose to pitch to him and give him an opportunity to win the game in both instances - one coming with the game tied in the bottom of the ninth and again with two runners on and trailing 5-3 in the eleventh. What has come to be almost an expectation for a big hit in the last month from the sophomore wasn’t to be on Monday with a strikeout in the ninth and a flyout on a diving play in left field in the eleventh to end the game.

Final straw
After the Sun Devil bullpen had recorded seven consecutive scoreless frames ending into the eleventh inning, the Wildcats finally broke through with a pair of leadoff doubles in the eleventh to plate the go-ahead run. Arizona had runners on the corners with one out as the Sun Devils attempted a pickoff move to third to keep the Wildcats honest but a muffed reception by Roellig allowed the run to score and made it a 5-3 ballgame. The Sun Devils got a pair of one-out singles in the bottom of the frame from Longo and Niclai to get the tying run on the basepath but were unable to capitalize to tie the game.

The big number
.104 -
With the exception of Saturday night’s 14-run effort, the Sun Devils are 5-for-48 (.083) with runners in scoring position over its six games over the last week. Arizona State was 6-for-13 on Saturday to make the overall week slightly more respectable. Entering tonight the team ranked 269th out of 308 teams over the last week with the .196 average with runners in scoring position it had over the last five games and that dropped to .180 after tonight’s effort, which would rank 283rd in the country dependent on other Monday results across the country.

Notables

  • ASU has scored multiple runs in 73 of its 122 half-innings with runs this season.
  • Landon Hairston extended his hitting streak to 21-consecutive games.
  • Nu’u Contrades’ home run in the eighth inning was the 26th of his career and he recorded his 14th multi-hit effort of the season.
  • It was off of Arizona right-hander Collin McKinney, who had allowed only two long balls over his previous 77 innings pitched at Arizona. In 54.1 innings last season, he did not allow a home run.
  • The Arizona State bullpen has been a strength over the past week outside of the ninth inning on Saturday. In the past week, they have boasted a 2.86 ERA in 28.1 innings pitched.
  • During that span, the bullpen accounted for 46 strikeouts, which are 11 more than any other team in the country.
  • For the sixth time this season, the Sun Devils stuck out 15 or more batters. It is the 24th time they recorded double-digit strikeouts.
  • ASU pitching held Arizona to just a .143 (1-for-7) average with runners in scoring position. Arizona was also 0-for-10 with two outs in the inning.
  • Thanks to their series win in Tucson last weekend, the Sun Devils had already clinched the season series with the Wildcats and finish with a 3-2 advantage.
  • The attendance of 6,003 was the seventh-highest total for a Sun Devil Baseball home game in the history of Phoenix Municipal Stadium. That is the highest total attendance for a midweek game for the program since making the move to Muni.

“It's just to compete. We know we can compete with those guys. It’s been kind of a tough week, a tough past week, but it's in the rearview mirror, so we're just gonna look ahead and play our best ball when it counts.”

Nu'u Contrades on the mindset moving forward

Inning by inning
First inning
Austin Musso started the game for the Sun Devils, where he sent the Wildcats down in order for a scoreless first inning capped off by a strikeout.

Austen Roellig reached for ASU on a walk, but was thrown out on a fielder’s choice that saw Dean Toigo reach first. Toigo made his way to third base on a double by Nu’u Contrades, but the inning was ended on a fly out by Dominic Smaldino.

Second inning
Musso got back to work in the second, giving up a leadoff homerun to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. After a flyout marked the first out of the inning, Musso gave up another solo homerun. No further runs were scored as the frame concluded on back-to-back strikeouts,

The Sun Devils were unable to make any noise in the second, with all three batters going down via flyout.

Third inning
Back on the mound, Musso got a flyout before giving up another solo shot to extend U of A’s lead to 3-0. However, Musso was able to get two more flyouts to end the frame.

PJ Moutzouridis and Landon Hairston got things going for ASU in the third, both reaching on singles. Both runners advanced into scoring position on a sac bunt by Austen Roellig. Moutzouridis rounded home on a sac fly from Toigo, getting ASU on the board before the inning ended on a strikeout, leaving Hairston stranded at third.

Fourth inning
A quick 1-2-3 inning for Musso was closed out with his fourth strikeout of the game.

A new pitcher came in for Arizona, sending the Devils hitters down in order.

Fifth inning
Easton Barrett came in to pitch for the Sun Devils, delivering a scoreless inning and only allowing one baserunner on a two-out walk.

Arizona State could not get anything going in the fifth inning, going down in order.

Sixth inning
Alex Overbay stepped onto the mound for ASU, allowing two hits, but no runs to keep the score 3-1.

Roellig and Toigo both reached on walks, but a subsequent double play left Toigo as the only baserunner at second. Toigo was stranded after a ground out by Smaldino ended the inning.

Seventh inning
Eli Buxton was the next pitcher out of the bullpen for the Sun Devils, working around a leadoff walk to keep it a 3-1 game.

A new pitcher came in for Arizona, who nailed Matt Polk on the first pitch. Dominic Longo followed up with a single into left field, and both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Following this, the Wildcats made a call to the bullpen. Hairston was intentionally walked to load the bases, but the inning was snuffed by a groundout, allowing no runs to score.

Eighth inning
Coming out of the bullpen to pitch was Sean Fitzpatrick, who struck out the side.

Toigo was hit by a pitch to open the frame and quickly advanced to second on a wild pitch. Nu’u Contrades tied the game with one swing, launching a 2-run home run to deep right center.

Ninth inning
Derek Schaefer was the next guy up for Arizona State, striking out the side on three consecutive looking strikes and sending the game to the bottom of the ninth.

Following a flyout, Moutzouridis was issued a walk, but the next two batters went down to send the game to extra innings.

Tenth inning
Schaefer remained in the game for the Sun Devils. A leadoff single allowed a baserunner for the Wildcats, and after a strikeout from Schaefer, another single put runners on first and second. The next batter lined into a double play as Smaldino snagged a line drive and dove back to first to get the third out.

Three straight outs ended the inning for the Sun Devils.

Eleventh inning
Colin Linder got the call, and started out by giving up back-to-back doubles to give the Wildcats a 4-3 lead. A pass ball and catcher’s interference put runners on the corners for Arizona. An additional run scored after a fielding error by ASU. Following this, Linder issued a walk to the batter, signaling Finn Edwards to come in for relief. Edwards was able to strike out the next two batters to close out the frame.

After a strikeout from Beckett Zavorek, both Longo and Coen Niclai reached on singles. A flyout from Moutzouridis allowed Longo to advance to third, but a flyout by Hairston ended the game, with the Sun Devils falling 5-3.

Quotables
Head Coach Willie Bloomquist
Opening statement
“Had our opportunities. We just didn't get it done. Bottom line, no excuses. We had several opportunities to cash in runs. We just couldn't come up with a big hit again, and (Austin) Musso did a good job of getting us started, the only runs he gave up were on the long ball. Fell behind on the ones that he gave up, had to put fastballs down the middle, and they punished it. And then the 0-2 pitch needs to be better there. But other than that, I thought Musso threw the ball pretty well. And for the most part, all the pitchers threw the ball really well tonight, just offensively, with the wind blowing the way it was, to only put up three runs was disappointing.”

On playing with lots of pressure
“Guys were potentially letting the emotions of the game get the best of them. We had a tremendous crowd here tonight, over 6000 people, and a big student section. We were grateful they came out. We just put them to sleep, unfortunately, on the offensive side of the ball, which was disappointing. I think guys may have been trying a little bit too hard up and down the lineup. That could be a reason why. But at the end of the day, we got to do a better job than that.”

On Nu’u Contrades’ performance
“He had a double and a home run, counted for two of the three runs that we scored. Nu’u’s a leader, he's going to put it on his shoulders. He had an opportunity there late to push a run across with the big hit. He's feeling that pressure of being the leader, and being a captain on our team, he wants to get it done. Right now he's out there playing on one leg and doing everything he can for us. So the last person I put blame on is Nu’u Contrades.”

On having a tough stretch of opponents ahead
“We just have to turn the page on today, after this, and get ready for BYU. We're not looking past them. They have a very capable team that's coming off a sweep in Houston. They got some nice arms, and they got some kids that can swing the bats pretty well. So we're going to be dealing with some weather there. Looks like it's going to be cold. We haven't been really in the cold yet this year. So that'll be a challenge for our guys. We have to figure out ways to win, try to win games on the road.”

Infielder Nu'u Contrades
On his takeaways from the game
“We just have to come up big in big spots. Today I had a lot of chances to do damage with runners on base and I came up a little short. We had runners on first and second, no outs, and we couldn't swing at it. We had a change up down and in to roll into a double play. So playing this one was kind of hard. Obviously it means a lot to the fans and we did fight, our pitchers threw the heck out of the ball. I just have to come up bigger in big spots.”

On Austin Musso’s start
“He's awesome. He battles, he competes up there. That's all you can ask for. He's going to be really big for us down the stretch and the future's better for him.”

On his mindset heading into the final stretch of the season and playing tougher teams
“It's just to compete. We know we can compete with those guys. It’s been kind of a tough week, a tough past week, but it's in the rearview mirror, so we're just gonna look ahead and play our best ball when it counts.”
