STOCKHOLM, Sweden -- Sun Devil Hockey alums Joey Daccord (2016-19) and Josh Doan (2021-23) won gold medals as rostered players on the U.S. Men’s National Team for the 2025 IIHF Men's World Championships. Team USA beat Switzerland, 1-0, in the gold-medal game for only the second gold medal for the U.S. in the event and first in 92 years.

The U.S. won the gold medal at the World Championship for the first time since 1933. Sunday’s win against Switzerland was the third time the U.S. ever played in the gold-medal game, as the Americans dropped a 2-1 decision in 1934 after beating Canada the year before, 2-1, in the championship.

The 2025 IIHF Men's World Championships was the first international competition for both Daccord and Doan who both currently play in the National Hockey League (NHL). Daccord plays with the Seattle Kraken and Doan with the Utah Mammoth.

Daccord, a foundational figure in ASU's NCAA era, played from 2016–19 before signing an NHL contract with the Ottawa Senators after leading ASU to its first NCAA Tournament appearance. He still holds multiple program records, including most career shutouts, wins, and overall record. The Massachusetts native recently completed his fourth season with the NHL's Seattle Kraken.

Doan, skated in the maroon and gold from 2021-23, ushering in the Mullett Arena era. The Scottsdale native scored the first goal in Mullett Arena and was named team MVP after the 2022–23 season. In 2021–22, he set ASU's freshman scoring record (37 points) and was named the program's eighth captain the following year.

Arizona State was tied for the second-most alumni on Team USA's roster, joining Boston College and the University of Michigan with two representatives each. Only Minnesota and Boston University have more, with three players apiece. Among National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) schools, only Western Michigan joins ASU with a representative: goaltender Hampton Slukynsky.
