The Matchup

First Meeting with Arizona
Sun Devil Men's Basketball took on in-state rival Arizona at Desert Financial Arena in the first of two meetings this season to start the month of February. The two sides gave State 48 residents a highly entertaining Saturday afternoon in a closely contest duel from wire-to-wire. The largest lead for either team never eclipsed double digits, keeping each possession equally important and intense.

Arizona State stepped up to match Arizona's offense firepower, building as much as a five-point lead in the opening stages of the second half. Adam Miller fueled the efforts on the offensive side of things, keeping ASU right in the thick of it. The performance of the senior turned out to not be enough as the Sun Devils fell, 81-72.

Last Time Out
Freshman Joson Sanon had 28 points in 38 minutes and ASU led 43-41 at the half, but playing with just six scholarship players it couldn't sustain and fell 99-73 at Utah Saturday evening. Utah shot .565 from the field (35-of-62) and outrebounded ASU (13-16; 4-14) 40-29 to take the lone meeting of the teams in the regular season.

Baheer Jihad added 16 points and Alston Mason returned from an illness that caused him to miss the BYU game on Wednesday to notch 13. The Sun Devils shot 17-of-30 (.570) in the first half and led by seven at the midway part of the first half, but being down two starters (Jayden Quaintance and Adam Miller) took its toll, as Utah made 8-of-14 (.570) from the three-point stripe in the second half to cruise late.

Sansational Performance
Freshman Joson Sanon put together a career-best performance against Utah. He finished with 28 points on 11-of-20 (55%) shooting. He made 4-of-5 from the three-point line and now sits in the Top-10 in program history for made 3PT FGs by a freshman. It marked the second-most points in a road game by a Sun Devil freshman (Jahii Carson's 32 at Washington on Feb. 2, 2013). The 28 points are the most by a Sun Devil since Remy Martin had 31 against Washington on Feb. 25, 2021.
