Tucson, Ariz – Going to the brink, Sun Devil Women's Tennis (11-6, 6-3 Big 12) fell to Arizona (16-7, 6-3 Big 12) 3-4 in a back and forth affair Saturday afternoon at LaNelle Robston Tennis Center. Arizona State will be back in action at Whiteman Tennis Center hosting TCU on Friday at 4 p.m. AZT and Baylor on Sunday at 12 p.m. AZT celebrating senior day.
Emilija Tverijonaite notched her tenth win of the season battling in three sets, ultimately winning 4-6, 6-0, 6-2. The sophomore's 10 wins leads the team and she moves to 6-2 during Big 12 play. Lily Taylor won in straight-sets 6-2, 6-2 to secure her sixth Big 12 win, tied with Tverijonaite for most on the team. The freshman has won six of her last seven matches.
Sara Svetac got the first point for the Sun Devils with a ranked win over No. 47 Josie Usereau, dropping only six games the entire match and winning 6-2, 6-4. In the second set, she won six of the last seven games to tie the match.
Freshman Lily Taylor continued having success from the #4 spot with a straight sets 6-2, 6-2 victory to give the Sun Devils a 2-1 lead. It's Taylor's sixth Big 12 win of the season and she has won six of her last seven matches. The WIldcats tied the match at two-all with a win on court three over Patricija Spaka.
Aiya Nupbay and Karin Altori dropped hard fought three-set matches.
Tverijonaite and Nupbay highlighted doubles for the Sun Devils grabbing their fourth conference win of the season by cruising to a 6-2 victory. Svetac and Taylor battled in a tiebreaker, but fell 6-7 having Arizona clinch the doubles point. Spaka and Altori played together for the first time all season, falling 5-7.
