The Sun Devil men's basketball team used a seven-man rotation at Kansas State on Sunday afternoon and put forth a solid defensive effort in a 66-54 win that saw the Sun Devils hold the Wildcats to 1-of-17 shooting during a second-half stretch that sealed the win.
ASU held Kansas State to a season-low 22-of-66 (.333) from the floor and 5-of-26 (.190) from the three-point stripe, as KSU's 54 points was a season low for a team that beat No. 16 Kansas and No. 13 Arizona in its past two home games. It is the fewest points allowed by ASU in a conference game since the Sun Devils defeated Cal, 71-44, on March 3, 2022.
Freshman Jayden Quaintance had 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting and seven boards to lead the Sun Devils, while freshman Amier Ali added 11 points as ASU led for 38 minutes and trailed for just 29 seconds.
The Sun Devils led 57-43 at the under-eight media timeout and stretched it to 66-45 before a 9-0 run in the final 1:28 led to the 12-point difference.
Shawn Phillips Jr. had another strong outing with 10 points and 11 boards. In his past four games he is averaging 10.4 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.3 blocks and is shooting 18-of-27 (.671) from the floor.
Kansas State guard Dug McDaniel came into the contest averaging 15.0 points over his past nine games, but was held to four points on 2-of-12 shooting while committing four turnovers.
ASU jumped out to a 31-19 lead, but KSU went on a 9-3 run to close the half as ASU led 34-28 at recess, and ASU scored the first seven of the half to put distance between the home squad. Both teams shot 13-of-32 (.410) from the field, but ASU made six three-pointers and held the Wildcats to 2-of-10. ASU shot the only free throws of the first half for either team and led for nearly 19 minutes.
