LA JOLLA, Calif. – No. 7 Sun Devil Water Polo (6-2, 0-0) fell 15-16 in an overtime heartbreaker to No. 14 UC San Diego (4-3, 0-0) on Friday night at Canyonview Aquatic Center. The Sun Devils are back tomorrow morning at 9:30 a.m. MST to face Concordia.
The Maroon and Gold held on for the back-and-forth action that broke out throughout the match in regulation, but were unable to keep up in the final overtime period and were outpaced by the Tritons in the final minute.
Junior Molly Glad had a clutch performance this evening, tallying five goals sprinkled throughout regulation and overtime. She was a key player in forcing the third overtime, notching two goals in the final minute of the first series of overtime.
GAME NOTABLES
The Tritons were able to make the first move, but Molly Glad responded with 1:39 left to go in the first, tying the game. UC San Diego was able to sneak one more in before the end of the first, entering the second 2-1 in favor of the Tritons.
Hannah McClaskey opened the scoring of the second period at 6:17 with the equalizer for the Sun Devils. The Tritons followed with a goal of their own with 5:56 remaining. The Tritons were able to regain the lead, but not for long as Millie Quin sent one into the back of the net 17 seconds later. UC San Diego then went on a 4-0 scoring run following Quin's goal. A penalty shot allowed Millie Quin to cut into the deficit by one at 1:03. The duo from down under struck again as less than a minute later, Sophie Shorter-Robinson scored with the assist from Millie Quin, closing the half 5-7, UCSD.
The second half began with a snipe from Glad at 7:33, bringing the game within one goal. UCSD was able to score with 3:35 remaining and again with 1:25 remaining, extending their lead 9-6. Freshman Hannah McClaskey nets a goal with under a minute to go in the third to close out the period.
UCSD opened the scoring in the fourth period, making the game 7-10. Glad completed the hat trick and notched a power play goal at 5:54 with the assist from Itziar Almeda. Another Almeda set up allowed Quin to bring the game to within one goal with 4:47 remaining. Almeda earned one of her own to tie the game with 2:43 remaining. Each team fired another goal into the net to make it 11-11 with 1:32 left to go. UCSD scored again but Sanne Keijzer was able to force overtime after her goal with 19 seconds remaining.
The Tritons took the early lead in overtime by scoring two back to back goals. McClaskey netted her first collegiate hat trick to cut the lead by one. UCSD was able to score one more goal to extend the lead 15-13. Molly Glad clutched up and notched two goals in a row to force another series of overtime.
The final overtime period was a stretch of back-and-forth but UCSD was able to clinch the victory with a late goal, finalizing the game 16-15.
