Men's Basketball Unable to Maintain Halftime Lead in Loss at KansasMen's Basketball Unable to Maintain Halftime Lead in Loss at Kansas
LAWRENCE, Kan. - Sun Devil Men's Basketball dropped a road contest to No. 11 Kansas on Wednesday evening.

Arizona State (10-4, 1-2) experienced another one of college basketball's best road environments when they travelled to Allen Fieldhouse to take on the Jayhawks (11-3, 2-1). Kansas was coming off a win by the second largest margin in program history and back in front of a home crowd, looking to avoid back-to-back losses in Lawrence for the first time since 1989.

For a half, it looked like Head Coach Bobby Hurley's team had Kansas on upset alert. The Sun Devils jumped out to a 42-36 lead at the break thanks to the offense of tandem of guard Alston Mason and guard/forward BJ Freeman combined with the all-around effort of forward Jayden Quaintance. Arizona State handled the hostile environment well for the first 20 minutes, frustrating the Jayhawks in their own building.

A focused and re-energized Kansas team came out of the locker room with a sense of urgency in the second half. Despite several momentum-changing runs, Arizona State remained firmly withing striking distance as the game flipped in the Jayhawks' favor. Several scoring droughts by the Maroon and Gold proved too much to overcome, as the home team used the boost provided by the home crowd to create separation.

Several Sun Devils enjoyed standout performances in the loss. Freshman forward Jayden Quaintance accepted the challenge of going head-to-head with Kansas center Hunter Dickinson, the reigining Big 12 Player of the Year and 2024-25 Preseason Big 12 Player of the Year. Quaintance not only produced with nine points and 11 boards, he made Dickinson work for his 15 points, as the All-American candidate went just 5-of-15 (33%) from the field while committing three turnovers. Senior guard Alston Mason returned to the state in which he was a high school standout and looked comfortable back in familar territory, scoring a team-best 19 points on 6-of-10 shooting while playing all 40 minutes.

Block Party
Freshman Jayden Quaintance has recorded 42 blocks thus far in the 2024-2025 season, adding one more block tonight. He has already surpassed Pac-12 career blocks leader Jordan Bachynski on the ASU freshman single-season blocks list. Quaintance has the second-most blocks in a single season by a freshman in program history and has done it in only 14 games. He has two or more blocks in 12 of 14 games this year, including six 4+ block performances.

42, Jayden Quaintance, 2024-25
33, Jamal Faulkner, 1990-91

If he were to maintain his current pace of blocks over a 31-game season, Quaintance would finish with the second-most blocks ever by a Big 12 freshman behind only Texas' Mohamed Bamba.

Hitting the Glass
Not only has Quaintance solidified his status as a premier shot blocker nationally, he has also been outstanding on the glass. That continued on Wednesday, as he grabbed 11 rebounds. He is on pace to become the program's all-time leader in rebounds per game by a freshman, a record previously held by Ike Diogu back in 2002-03. Quaintance now has 10+ rebounds in six games, including in three of the past four contests.

Forgotten in the result of the game might be the effort by the Sun Devils from the free throw line. In one of the toughest places nationally for opponents to shoot free throws, Arizona State finished 11-of-12 (91%) from the line. ASU is now 45-for-57 (78.9%) over their past four games after going 166-for-237 (70.1%) in their first ten games.

Free'd Up
An underrated part of Arizona State's success has been the steady play of senior guard/forward BJ Freeman. He once again scored in double figures against No.11 Kansas. Freeman has finished with 10+ points in 11 games this season, the most of any Sun Devil.

Sansational Start
Due to injury, Arizona State was without the services of guard Joson Sanon, who has proven to be one of the premier freshman in the country during ASU's strong start. He is averaging a team-best 13.5 points per game this season, which is the most among Big 12 freshman. Sanon is third in the Big 12 shooting 48.3% (28-of-58) from three-point range this season. Sanon is tied for 22nd nationally among freshman (13th Power 4 + Big East) in points per game and is currently averaging the eighth-most points of any freshmen in program history.

Next Up
The Sun Devils return home to face a second-straight preseason Top-10 opponent, this time hosting Baylor. Arizona State looks to reverse their recent fortune in the series, as the Bears have won each of the past five meetings. This will be Baylor's first appearance in Tempe since 2009. The matchup will be broadcasted on ESPN+.

Constant Competition
Head Coach Bobby Hurley and his staff have once again constructed an extremely challenging slate that saw Arizona State hosting winning programs and taking on strong competition away from home. The 11-game schedule featured seven contests away from home and four at Desert Financial Arena in addition to the exhibition matchup with Duke prior to the season on Oct. 27. ASU faced 2024 NCAA Tournament participants Gonzaga, Grand Canyon, New Mexico, Saint Mary's, and Florida before Big 12 play even started.
