TEMPE - Sun Devil Men's Basketball hosts rival Arizona at Desert Financial Arena on Saturday, February 1 at 11 AM MST.

Arizona State (12-8, 3-6) will take on the Wildcats in the 249th meeting between the two programs. Head Coach Bobby Hurley's team is winners of two of their past three games, both of which have come in tough road environments with the Sun Devils short-handed. ASU now turns their attention to a rare morning matchup with rival Arizona on national television.

The Matchup
The month of February starts with the most important opponent of the year, as rival Arizona comes to Tempe for their annual visit. The Wildcats (14-6, 8-1) are currently second in the Big 12 and represent a Quad 1 opportunity for Arizona State. This is the first of two meetings of the season between the two sides, with the Sun Devils returning the trip to Tucson in March.

How to Follow
Arizona State makes their debut on the national CBS network on Saturday, February 1 at 11 AM MST when they face Arizona. It is the 13th time the program will be featured on national television so far in 2024-25. Ian Eagle (play-by-play) and Bill Raftery (analyst) are on the call. Make sure to listen to Tim Healey and Kyle Dodd on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM (KMVP).

The NET (NCAA Evaluation Tool) ranking is used in determining NCAA Tournament selections. Arizona State is 58th in the current edition. Coach Hurley's team has played in 14 Quad 1 & 2 games and are undefeated in Quad 3 & 4 matchups (6-0). Three of their losses are away from home to teams currently ranked in the NET Top-15 (#11 Gonzaga, #5 Florida, #8 Kansas). ASU has a favorable average opponent NET ranking of 4, an indication of a challenging schedule.

Trophy Case
Jayden Quaintance - Big 12 Newcomer of the Week (12/23)
Joson Sanon - Big 12 Co-Newcomer of the Week (11/18)

Last Time Out
The Arizona State men's hoops team (12-8; 3-6) came out strong and led for the first 27 minutes, then held off desperate Colorado in a back-and-forth Big 12 road tilt Tuesday night, 70-68. Down to basically a six-man rotation after the first five minutes, ASU was led by Adam Miller who had 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting in 39 minutes, including four three-pointers. Alston Mason – second in the Big 12 entering the game at more than 35 minutes per game – had 17 points in 39 minutes, while Shawn Phillips Jr. had 13 points and eight rebounds.

ASU jumped out to leads of 11-2 (14:46) and 19-9 (8:40) before settling for a 33-26 halftime lead. The second half saw five lead changes, four ties and CU led for 2:37, but after the Buffaloes took a 53-50 lead at 8:34, the Sun Devils scored seven straight points and never gave up the lead again.

Handcuffing Hammond
Colorado star guard Julian Hammond III leads his team averaging 13.9 points on 45.4% shooting. In two games against Arizona State, he has averaged 6.5 points and shot 5-of-23 (.217), including 5-of-16 in the meeting on Tuesday. The Sun Devil defense will get another test when facing Arizona guard Caleb Love, who is fifth in the Big 12 in scoring.

Road Tests
Arizona State has played in some of the toughest road environments in the nation. In their exhibition matchup with Duke, Head Coach Bobby Hurley and his squad experienced Cameron Indoor Stadium to start the year. Their third game of the season was at 'The Kennel', home of the Gonzaga Bulldogs. Their first Big 12 Conference game was in front of 16,000+ at the Marriott Center against BYU. ASU then made their return to Allen Fieldhouse to take on Kansas. The three programs are a combined 156-17 (90.2%) over the past four years at home. Hurley had his team ready for the challenge at West Virginia on the road, picking up a Quad 1 win in one of the toughest atmospheres in the country. The Sun Devils are coming off their seventh win away from home, defeating Colorado in Boulder.

One of One
Freshman forward Jayden Quaintance has proven to be one of the nation's most unique and versatile athletes. He is currently the ONLY PLAYER IN THE NATION averaging at least 9.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 3.0 blocks. He produces at that high of a level while playing 31.3 minutes per game. Quaintance is averaging exactly 10.3 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 3.0 blocks with room to spare on two of the three qualifiers.

Buying Stocks
Quaintance has combined for 78 'stocks' (57 blocks + 21 steals) in 19 games so far this season. He is one of only two players in the nation (only high major conference player) to boast these numbers (55+ blocks and 20+ steals) despite missing a game. The next closest Power 4 + Big East player is Creighton senior center Ryan Kalkbrenner with 71 stocks (57 blocks + 14 steals). For comparison, National Defensive Player of the Year candidate Johni Broome from Auburn has 64 stocks in 18 games (50 blocks + 14 steals).

Block Party
Freshman Jayden Quaintance has recorded 57 blocks thus far in the 2024-2025 season and averages the fourth-most blocks per game (3.0) of any player in the nation. He broke the program freshman record and did so in only 18 games. He has two or more blocks in 16 of 19 games this year, including eight 4+ block performances.

55, Mario Bennett, 1991-92
33, Jamal Faulkner, 1990-91
31, Ike Diogu, 2002-03

If he were to maintain his current pace of blocks over a 31-game season, Quaintance would finish with the second-most blocks ever by a Big 12 freshman behind only Texas' Mohamed Bamba despite having missed a game.

Arizona State is second in the Big 12 and 20th nationally averaging 5.2 blocks per game. Freshman Jayden Quaintance is a big reason why, contributing a league-best 3.0. Basheer JihadShawn Phillips Jr., and BJ Freeman each have nine or more blocks this season.

Hitting the Glass
Not only has Quaintance solidified his status as a premier shot blocker nationally, he has also been outstanding on the glass. He is on pace to become the program's all-time leader in rebounds per game by a freshman, a record previously held by Ike Diogu back in 2002-03. Quaintance has 10+ rebounds in eight games. He is second nationally among freshmen in both rebounds and rebounds per game and has the third most total rebounds in the Big 12 by any player (161).

Mason has led the team in minutes in 17 of the 20 games, including playing 37+ minutes in eight straight games. He once again led in minutes for ASU with 39 against Colorado, matching fellow backcourt member Adam Miller. Mason is also shooting a team-high 80% from the free-throw line, which is 11th in the Big 12.

Ba-Sheer Force
Senior forward Basheer Jihad has been extremely effective at getting to the free throw line while also getting opposing big men in foul trouble. He finished 9-of-11 from the free throw line in the victory over Colorado. Jihad ranks second in the Big 12 in free throw attempts (141) and third in made free throws (86). He now has five games in which he has attempted 10+ free throws.

Sansational Start
Due to injury, Arizona State was without the services of guard Joson Sanon against Colorado, Kansas, UCF, Cincinnati, and West Virginia. When in the lineup, he has been in the conversation for best freshman in the country. Sanon comes into the game ranking first in the Big 12 from deep if he qualified with enough attempts. He is shooting 31-of-69 (45%) from three-point range this season. Sanon is 32nd nationally among freshman (17th Power 4 + Big East) in points per game.

Shawn is Surging
Junior center Shawn Phillips Jr. continues to develop as the season progresses. With Arizona State battling injuries, Phillips Jr. has stepped up. He enjoyed his best game as a Sun Devil in the win over Colorado, matching a career-high with 13 points while adding eight rebounds and two blocks. KenPom has the Maroon & Gold with the 32nd-best defensive rating despite playing the 6th-toughest offensive schedule according to KenPom.

80-Point Mark
The Sun Devils have scored 80 points or more nine times through 20 games this season after doing it only six times in 32 games last year. ASU is 7-2 when reaching the 80-point mark.

Hurley also earned his 150th career win when ASU beat Grand Canyon back in 2021.

About those Sun Devil Wins
Coach Hurley has notched 167 wins at Arizona State and has done it while scheduling aggressively and not being afraid to play on the road. Constant Competition
Head Coach Bobby Hurley and his staff once again constructed an extremely challenging slate that saw Arizona State hosting winning programs and taking on strong competition away from home. The 11-game schedule featured seven contests away from home and four at Desert Financial Arena in addition to the exhibition matchup with Duke prior to the season on Oct. 27. ASU faced 2024 NCAA Tournament participants Gonzaga, Grand Canyon, New Mexico, Saint Mary's, and Florida before Big 12 play even started.
