A season that began with a lot of excitement delivered just that. From upperclassmen such as Jack Dolan, Julian Hill, Erin Milligan and Charli Brown plus a variety of underclassmen, it was evident early on that the Sun Devils were going to make a statement.
KEY MOMENTS
- The Sun Devil men and the Sun Devil women were both ranked in the first CSCAA team rankings of the season back in October as the Sun Devil men were ranked No. 1 and the Sun Devil women were No. 19.
- From September through early November, the Sun Devils hosted seven home meets which featured No. 7/15 Georgia, UNLV, No. 4/11 NC State, No. 21 UCLA (women's only) and No. 21/5 USC. The second of two meets against the NC State Wolfpack featured an exhibition meet swimming events in long course meters, the traditional Olympic event length.
- Men take first, and women place second at the NC State Invite in Greensboro in mid-November, as the Sun Devils broke six school records in the process.
- Two days after competing at the NC State Invite, both the Sun Devil men and women had dominant performances against conference foe Utah to close out 2023. To begin the spring, the Sun Devils had yet another dominant performance against GCU for Senior Day.
- In January, the biggest dual meet of the year in the collegiate swim world lived up to its expectations as ASU and Cal battled it out until the very end as the meet ended in a 150-150 tie for the Sun Devil men and the Golden Bears men and will forever be remembered as one of the greatest dual meets in men's swimming history.
- Three weeks later in Tucson, the Sun Devil women and Sun Devil men combined for 23 event wins as both programs picked up big wins against in-state rival Arizona to complete the regular season.
- Lindsay Looney repeated as the Pac-12 champion in the 500 free, making it the fourth time in five years that a Sun Devil has won the event. Later in the week, Looney was named the Pac-12 Scholar Athlete of the Year for women's swim and dive for her achievements in and out of the pool. The Sun Devil Women took fifth overall at the conference meet in Federal Way. In the final of the men's platform event, senior Zachory Lundgren scored 292.45 to place fourth overall.
- A week later, the Sun Devil men cruised to back-to-back Pac-12 championships after winning their first conference title in program history last season. The Sun Devils won 16 of the 18 events and broke 11 school records as they never looked back holding on to first place all week.
- A total of 27 Sun Devils qualified for the NCAA Championships among both the Sun Devil men and women. Lindsay Looney placed seventh in the 200 fly in addition to a 16th-place finish in the 500 free. The 800 free relay of Ieva Maluka, Looney, Erin Milligan and Charli Brown teamed up to go 6:57.06 to place 12th overall.
- The honors kept pouring in for Lindsay Looney as she was named the women's swim and dive recipient of the NCAA Elite 90 award, presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site.
- The Sun Devil men went on to make history as they won their first NCAA Championship, becoming the first school not named Cal or Texas to win an NCAA title since Michigan in 2013. The Sun Devils won seven events throughout the week en route to the championship. Nine school records fell throughout the four-day competition in Indiana, along with three NCAA records. Additionally, 14 Sun Devils received All-American honors throughout their time at the meet. The second Sun Devil to receive the NCAA Elite 90 Award was Tiago Behar.
Sun Devil Swim has a new leader as associate head coach Herbie Behm has been elevated to head coach, as announced by Interim Vice President of Athletics James Rund on April 1.
Behm is the new head coach in Tempe after most recently excelling as the associate head coach of both swim programs, a role he had held since August 2022. Before serving as the associate head coach, Behm established himself as one of the fastest rising names in the profession during a stint as the assistant coach for four seasons at Arizona State.
New ASU head swim and dive coach Herbie Behm made a statement regarding his hiring on Instagram.

He has been part of a culture change within the program which most recently resulted in the men's team winning the 2024 NCAA Championship and the women's team recording a Top-25 finish at NCAAs. Whether as an assistant or associate head coach, Behm has been an integral part of signing and developing some of the World's elite swimmers.
The ties to the Sun Devil Swim program run deep for Behm. He swam for the Sun Devil swim program from 2010-13 and graduated with a bachelor's degree in Psychology with a minor in Communication in 2013. Behm is now one of nine ASU alumni who are head coaches of programs at ASU.
