CONTAINING THE COUGARS
Washington State entered Saturday's matchup with Arizona State as one of the hottest teams in the nation, having won eight consecutive games. Arizona State was able to snap the nation's fourth-longest active winning streak and knock the Cougars out of first place in the Pac-12 thanks to a terrific defensive effort.

The Sun Devils held WSU to just 39.3% from the field, which was their third-worst shooting percentage in a game this year and only the third time this season they have shot below 40%. The Cougars shot just 3-of-18 (16.7%) from three, matching the lowest clip by a Sun Devil opponent this year. Washington State went 0-of-7 on three-point attempts in the second half, helping Arizona State move to No. 1 in the Pac-12 in opponent three-point shooting percentage.

The 12-point loss was the Cougars first in regulation since Jan. 6 against Oregon (12-game stretch) and only their third double-digit loss of 2023-24.

THE WELLS DRIED UP
One of the main reasons why Arizona State was able to defeat Washington State was the gameplan implemented and executed against Cougars' star forward Jaylen Wells. Wells came into the game having scored double figures in 14 straight games, averaging 15.9 points per game during that span. The Sun Devil defense managed to limit his effectiveness, holding him to just eight points on 3-of-12 shooting. Wells did not score a point in the second half and was 0-of-5 from the field as Arizona State took control.

RANKED WINS UNDER HURLEY
The win against #21 Washington State marks the 12th time beating a ranked opponent under coach Bobby Hurley. He moves into second-place in program history for most ranked wins by a head coach. It is the seventh time ASU has beaten a ranked opponent by double digits under Hurley. The Cougars stayed in the Top-25 this week, moving up to No. 19 in the AP Poll.

ABOUT THOSE SUN DEVIL WINS
Coach Hurley has notched 155 wins at Arizona State and has done it while scheduling aggressively and not being afraid to play on the road. He has won 98 games in Arizona, but also has won at least five games in California (14), Nevada (12), Oregon (six) and Washington (five). Four wins have taken place in Utah, three in New York, and two in Colorado, Nebraska, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Single wins have taken place in Florida, Georgia, Kansas, New Jersey and Texas.

RECORD SETTER
Junior guard Frankie Collins made history in the matchup with Washington last Thursday. He finished the game with three steals, making him the single-season record holder at Arizona State for steals in a season. Collins broke Lafayette Lever's 42-year-old previous record of 76 steals set in 1982. He continues to add to his record, currently sitting at 78 total steals.

74 – Eddie House, 2000
74 – Lafayette Lever, 1981
73 – James Harden, 2008
73 – Marcell Capers, 1993

I'LL TAKE THAT
Through 28 games of the 2023-24 season, Frankie Collins has emerged as one of the best perimeter defenders in the nation. Collins has 78 steals, putting him fourth in the country in the category. He is currently sixth in the nation in steals per game, averaging 2.8 per contest. He matched a program-record with eight steals in the victory over UMass Lowell and has 15 3+-steal performance already this season. His 78 steals are 28 MORE than any other player in the Pac-12 (Kobe Johnson, USC - 50) and he has four games with 6+ steals.

FRANKIE DOES IT ALL
Guard Frankie Collins has emerged as one of the top all-around players in the Pac-12 Conference. He is currently THE ONLY PLAYER in the nation averaging at least 13.8 points (1st on team), 4.7 rebounds (2nd on team), 3.3 assists (1st on team), and 2.8 steals (1st on team). Collins is stuffing the stat sheet in a historic manner while playing only 32.0 minutes per game (T-20th in the conference). Collins has been extremely consistent, reaching double figures scoring in 25 of the 28 games this season.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH
Throughout the month of February, Sun Devil Athletics has been celebrating Black History Month by recognizing the impact of influential members of the community. Sun Devil Men's Basketball Associate Head Coach Jermaine Kimbrough was recently featured in a story where he explained the importance of educating the program about Black History Month and the role he plays in promoting a positive culture. SENIOR NIGHT
The Sun Devil Men's Basketball program will be honoring the contributions of six individuals who made a tremendous impact on the program. The matchup against Arizona is the final game of the 2023-24 season at Desert Financial Arena and will feature a pre-game ceremony recognizing our senior class. Four players and two managers will be joined by family members for a special celebration prior to tip-off.

ALONZO GAFFNEY
Gaffney has been with the program for the past three years and has been a contributor in many ways. During his 94 games in a Sun Devil uniform, several major program milestones were reached. He is making his final season in Tempe count, posting career-highs in points, assists, blocks, and steals. Gaffney is the lone player in the Pac-12 with 30 steals and 30 blocks this season. He already earned his undergraduate degree from Arizona State and is now pursuing a Master's in Liberal Studies.

JOSE PEREZ
Perez spent his final season of a decorated collegiate career in Tempe. The Bronx, New York native left a significant mark in his only season in Tempe. He is averaging over 13 points per game for the Sun Devils and has seven 20-point performances. In his career, Perez has compiled over 1,800 points, 500 rebounds, and 400 assists in 125 games. He already earned his undergraduate degree and is now pursuing a Master's in Liberal Studies.

BOBBY HURLEY
Hurley has been a member of the program for the past three years. The guard out of Scottsdale chose to stay home to play for his father at Arizona State. He appeared in 19 games throughout his career, including seven this season. Hurley recorded his first career points by converting a three-pointer in the win over Grambling State last year. This year as an upperclassman he stepped up as a leader, playing an important role in the locker room. He is pursuing his undergraduate degree in Sports Journalism at the Cronkite School.

ZANE MEEKS
Meeks joined the program for his final season of eligibility. The Prairie Village, Kansas native provided valuable size and strength in the post while serving as a veteran presence off the court. He played in the first five games for the Sun Devils before an injury ended his season. Meeks had six points and five rebounds in the win over Texas Southern. He finished 6-of-13 from three-point range in his five games of action. He already earned his undergraduate degree and is now pursuing a Master's in Organizational Leadership.

Student Manager Sam Sitarz has been with the program for all four years and has made a tremendous impact. He has been a valuable member of the manager staff while pursuing his undergraduate degree in Business Data Analytics and is set to graduate in the Spring.

Student Manager Eli Gross has been with the program for two years and is in his first year serving as the Co-Head Manager. His commitment and effort were crucial to the operations of Sun Devil Men's Basketball. He is pursuing his undergraduate degree in Sports Journalism and is set to graduate in the Spring.

COMFORTABLE WHEN IT'S CLOSE
After going 12-5 in games decided by six points or less (two possessions) last year, the Sun Devils are 5-3 in such games so far this season. Arizona State is 40-20 (.666) in close games over the past five seasons. The 40 wins are the most in the nation during that span. ASU is 5-2 in games decided by three points or fewer this season. To take it a step further, ASU is 6-3 over its last nine tilts when the game is decided by a two-point deficit or less. Overall, ASU is 25-17 in two point or less games under Bobby Hurley.

DON'T COUNT US OUT
Arizona State has come back to win a game when trailing at halftime 44 times during the Bobby Hurley era and five times this season, three of which have come on the road. They trailed Utah, California, and Stanford at the break in games away from home before mounting a successful comeback. Since 2015-16, the Sun Devils are Top-15 in the nation and lead the Pac-12 with their 44 halftime comeback victories.

(-9) UMass Lowell 31, ASU 22/Nov. 16, 2023/ASU 71, UMass Lowell 69

ASU trailed by as many as 16 points in the second half of the Cal game, making this the second straight season in which they overcame a deficit of at least 16 to win a conference game. The Sun Devils won at Oregon St on 1/14/23 after trailing by as many as 16 in the first half.

The Sun Devils nearly pulled off a 25-point comeback against Washington last Thursday, which would have represented the largest deficit overcome in college basketball this season. They outscored the Huskies 51-30 in the second half, including a three separate runs of 8-0, 7-0, and 6-0.

WHAT'S TRENDING

  • Adam Miller has scored at least 12 points in each of his last six games, averaging 14.7 points during that span. He is shooting an efficient 31-for-57 (54.4%) from the field and 12-for-26 (46.2%) from three. He is also 14-for-16 (87.5%) from the free throw line.
    • Miller ranks seventh in the Pac-12 shooting 84.1% (53-of-63) from the free-throw line.
  • Jose Perez has scored at least 14 points in each of his last five games, averaging 16.4 points during that span. He has attempted 35 total free throws in those five games. Perez now has 19 double-figure scoring performances this season.

WINNING THE TURNOVER BATTLE
Arizona State has done an excellent job of taking care of the basketball during the 2023-24 season. The Sun Devils have won the turnover battle in 23 of their 28 games this season, including in the win over No. 21 Washington State. The Maroon & Gold are the best team in the Pac-12 and rank 29th in the nation when it comes to turnover margin, sitting at +3.1 on the year. ASU forces the second most turnovers/game (13.6) while committing the third-fewest (10.5) of any team in the Pac-12. This is a matchup between the two best teams in the Pac-12 when it comes to forcing the opponent into turnovers, with Arizona ranking first in the league in the category.

ZO SAYS NO
Sun Devil forward Alonzo Gaffney is one of the most versatile defenders in the Pac-12 and is a key to the Arizona State defense. He is the ONLY PLAYER in the conference with at least 30 blocks (32) and 30 steals (31) this season. Gaffney has ten games in which he has registered one block and one steal. He ranks 5th in the league in blocks and is T-18th in steals.

ASU RECORD BY STARTING LINEUP
Due injuries to Shawn Phillips Jr.Zane Meeks, and Brycen Long early in the season, the Sun Devils have been shorthanded the entirety of the year. With Adam Miller gaining eligibility midway through the campaign, fluctuation continues with Arizona State's roster. This has resulted in Coach Hurley using ten different starting lineup combinations in 28 games. Frankie Collins is the only Sun Devil to have started every game, with eight different players earning a start so far this year. ASU has at least one win with seven different lineup combinations. The Maroon & Gold started a different lineup against Washington State for the sixth straight game.

PEREZ WILL MAKE YOU PAY
Graduate transfer Jose Perez has been a huge addition to the Sun Devil Men's Basketball roster. He is one of the best players in the country at getting to the free-throw line. He set a new career-high against SMU earlier in the year, attempting 15 free throws in the victory. Perez has now attempted 724 free throws in his career, the sixth-highest total among active NCAA Division I players. His 539 made free-throws puts him eighth among active NCAA Division I players. Perez is a career 74.4% shooter from the charity stripe and is 54-for-66 (82%) over his last 13 games. He currently ranks 40th in the nation and second in the Pac-12 this year with 169 free throw attempts.

Perez is one of only 17 active players at the NCAA Division I level that has reached 1,825 career points (1,827) and 410 career assists (414). Perez has the third-fewest total games played (125) of any player on the list (James Bishop IV, George Washington - 122; Mark Sears, Alabama, 123). In the win over Stanford, he secured his 500th career rebound, making him one of only 25 active players at the Division I level with 1,825 career points and 550 career rebounds (552). To take it a step further, Perez is one of only SEVEN players at the NCAA Division I level with at least 1,825 points, 410 assists, AND 550 rebounds in their career (Tristen Newton - UConn, RayJ Dennis - Baylor, Marcus Domask - Illinois, Baylor Scheierman - Creighton, Jahmir Yong - Maryland, Aaron Estrada - Alabama). He is one of ten players in the Pac-12 to have seven or more 20+ point performances.
