COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – It was the Semptimphelter Show on Saturday night as junior netminder TJ Semptimphelter backstopped the No. 12 Arizona State ice hockey team (11-3-2) to a 38-save shutout of the Colorado College Tigers (7-6-1) at Ed Robson Arena. Alex Young and Ryan Alexander scored ASU's goals to top off the 2-0 victory.
The shutout is Semptimphelter's third of the season and eighth of his career which ties Joey Daccord's program record. His three shutouts this year is tied for first in the NCAA.
GAME NOTABLES
Six minutes into back-and-forth play, the Sun Devil penalty kill unit went to work, successfully suffocating a Tigers man-advantage chance. Junior defenseman Ty Murchison was the guilty party called for tripping at 6:20. Thirteen minutes into the game, senior winger Alex Young drove the net and scored ASU's first goal to take the 1-0 lead. Tim Lovell earned the assist.
Second Period
Ninety seconds into the middle frame graduate captain Tyler Gratton sat in the box for two-minutes for cross-checking. While on the kill, Ryan Alexander made a quick steal from the Tigers to score a breakaway shorthanded goal to give ASU the 2-0 lead. Ethan Szmagaj earned the assist, his second assist of the season. Semptimphelter stood on his head, making several slick saves halfway through to keep the Tigers scoreless. He faced 22 shots through two periods.
Third Period
The power play unit got its first chance of the game at the 90-second mark, but could not convert. The Tigers pushed the envelope, looking to answer back, forcing Semptimphelter to make 16 saves in the final frame, but to no avail. Semptimphelter secured his third shutout of the season
UP NEXT: ASU returns to Mullett Arena as host to Dartmouth on Friday, Dec. 8 and Saturday, Dec. 9. Puck drop on Friday is set for 7 p.m. MST and 5 p.m. MST on Saturday night.
