OXFORD, Ohio – The No. 13/16 Arizona State ice hockey team (4-1-0) came in hot on Friday night, leading 4-1 with 13 minutes left in the third period, but fizzled late in regulation, dropping the opening game, 5-4, in overtime, at Miami University (4-1-0). The Sun Devils chase the series split tomorrow night at Goggin Ice Center with puck drop at 4:05 p.m. MST.
Four Sun Devils scored, including Ty Jackson, Lukas Sillinger, Kyle Smolen and Alex Young.
With a pair of goals on Friday night, Sillinger and Smolen each extended their point-scoring streaks to four and three games, respectively. Benji Eckerle also reached a four-game point scoring streak with an assist on Sillinger's goal.
GAME NOTABLES
TJ Semptimphelter made his fifth start of the season and finished with 28 saves on the night. Sun Devil skaters blocked 20 shots while ASU outshot Miami, 34-33, through 81 minutes of play.
First Period
It only took 70 seconds for the Sun Devils to land on the scoreboard as Dylan Jackson forced a turnover in the Miami zone and delivered the puck to his twin, Ty Jackson, who netted his first goal of the season. It is the fastest goal from the start of the game for ASU this season at 1:10 into the opening frame. In all four games thus far, the Sun Devils hadn't scored until the second period.
One of the nation's top penalty kill units put their skills on display, shutting down the Redhawks through a five-minute major assessed to Kyle Smolen for contact to the head at 3:10. Miami scored at the halfway mark of the period to even the score going into the first intermission.
Second Period
Both teams put up a clean penalty sheet in the middle frame. Lukas Sillinger scored the 1-1 tiebreaker with assists from the Jackson twins. Ten minutes later, Smolen inked his name on the scoresheet with a goal from Benji Eckerle and Charlie Schoen.
Third Period
The special teams for both benches had the cylinders firing in the last frame of regulation. ASU tallied its fourth goal of the game on a power play opportunity with a goal from Alex Young. Defenseman Anthony Dowd made the puck carry deep into the zone and tossed it through to Young at the crease. Miami brought the score within one with less than five minutes in the third period with their own power play goal. With 56 seconds left in regulation, the Redhawks pulled their netminder and scored with the extra skater to tie the game, 4-4. Miami scored the game-winning goal 21 seconds into overtime to defeat ASU, 5-4.
