TEMPE – Sun Devil triathlon head coach Cliff English announced the hiring of Kyla Roy as the program's assistant coach on Wednesday afternoon. Roy returns to Arizona State, where she was a member of the team from 2017-22.

"I am thrilled to have Kyla Roy as our assistant coach for the Sun Devil women's triathlon program," English said. "I coached Kyla for five years with our team and she was an incredible student-athlete, a real leader by example. She was undefeated in 2019, the year she won the NCAA collegiate national championship individual title and led our team to our fourth straight title!"

Roy stated, "I am super excited to join the coaching side of ASU triathlon and continue to work with the program. Being a former student-athlete and having gone through the program, this team is special to me. Cliff is an amazing coach and mentor, I am thrilled to learn more from him and build a strong partnership and team."

During her Sun Devil career, Roy helped the program win four national championships, including her undefeated season and the individual national championship in 2019. Roy was named a First Team All-American Honoree all five years at ASU. She was also named a Pac-12 Fall Academic Honor Roll Honoree and received the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship in 2021.

Roy began triathlon and swimming at the age of five and transitioned to triathlon competitively at 13. She won the 2015 Canada Junior Triathlon National Championship and Edmonton CAMTRI Triathlon Junior American Cup. Roy was the 2019 Canada Under-23 National Champion after finishing first at the Canadian Sprint Triathlon National Championships.

Last season, Roy was a volunteer assistant with the Sun Devils. She has been working with the provincial team as a mentor and coach for the younger athletes in her hometown of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, since 2017.

English added, "Kyla knows the sport and the tradition and culture of our team here at Arizona State. She will be a huge asset to the team, and I have 100 percent confidence that she will continue to help us be a dominant team well into the future."
