LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Sun Devil Lacrosse dropped the first of four consecutive games against Top-20 teams, falling to USC 17-10 on Friday evening.
Arizona State (4-4, 3-2) welcomed back defenders Mallory Martel and Gigi Gaspar from injury, keeping it close with the No. 18 Trojans. Three different Sun Devils scored two goals, with Emily Glagolev dishing out three assists. Katie Vahle made eight saves, including several on free-position attempts. A 4-1 fourth quarter allowed USC to create additional separation, with ASU unable to keep pace.
The Sun Devils return home on Sunday to host No. 11 Florida at 11 AM MST. Arguably the biggest non-conference matchup in program history will happen at Sun Devil Soccer/Lacrosse Stadium. Sun Devil Lacrosse alumni will also be honored at halftime, returning to Tempe for the enticing contest. The showdown will be broadcasted through the ASU Live Stream, with live stats also available.
TURNING POINT
A second yellow card issued to Bella Gaspar midway through the third quarter forced the Sun Devils to adjust their defensive rotation. At that point, ASU was trailing 11-7 and still within striking distance. The Trojans would go on to outscore the Sun Devils 6-3 after that point, sealing the conference victory.

Arizona State got on the board first courtesy of a free-position goal by Taylor Pinzone, who continues to emerge as an offensive threat. It did not take her long to find the back of the net again, answering a Trojan goal only three minutes later with her second of the night. Back-to-back USC goals put them back on top 3-2, but Emily Munro scored with 1:23 left in the period to re-tie the game.
SECOND QUARTER
The second quarter was one of runs, as both teams answered multiple goal stretches with one of their own. USC scored the first two goals of the period, but ASU was quick to respond. Both Carley Adams and Emily Munro scored off feeds from Anna Thornton, the first two assists of her career to even the game. USC went on an important 4-0 run to take the largest lead of the game, but the Sun Devils had one more answer. Mina Scott scored with only 23 seconds left to cut the Trojan halftime lead to 9-6.
THIRD QUARTER
USC extended their lead to five after scoring the first two goals of the period. ASU's response came courtesy of Emily Glagolev, assisted by Carley Adams. The Trojans once again scored a pair of goals to push their lead to six, but the Sun Devils mounted one more comeback effort. Three straight Sun Devil goals came at an important time, two scored in the third quarter. Kaylon Buckner and Maddy Hunter each finished off a pass from Emily Glagolev to cut the lead to four.
FOURTH QUARTER
The Sun Devils struck first in the fourth quarter, bringing the game withing three goals. Carley Adams scored the third consecutive Sun Devil goal assisted by Emily Glagolev, making it 13-10 USC. The Trojans would go on a 4-0 run to end the game, taking advantage of the short-handed Sun Devils with a late run to clinch the 17-10 victory.

For the first time, two of the largest universities in the nation will matchup on a lacrosse field. The Florida Gators come to Tempe for a 11 AM MST showdown on Sunday. Florida currently sits at 5-4 and is the No. 11 team in the nation according to Inside Lacrosse. The Gators have arguably played one of the nation's toughest schedules, already facing #2 North Carolina, #5 Maryland, #5 Stony Brook, #9 Loyola (MD), and #3 Syracuse. Head Coach Amanda O'Leary will go up against another one of her former players, as Sun Devil Lacrosse Assistant Coach Nicole Graziano was a star attacker for the Gators from 2012-16. She was a part of several decorated Florida teams and the program continues to win.
The 2022 Florida team will be a handful, as they are extremely balanced on both offense and defense. Danielle Pavinelli leads the way with 41 points and 30 goals, with Emma LoPinto not far behind with 39 points and 17 assists. The Gators play disciplined team defense and only allow a little over 10 goals/game, despite the tough schedule. Goalkeeper Sarah Reznick has started all nine games in the cage, credited with all five wins. She has made 67 saves at a 42% clip, playing 490 of a possible 540 minutes.
