OREM, Utah -- Redshirt freshman No. 10 Cohlton Schultz (6-0) defeated the No. 1 heavyweight wrestler in the Big 12, Wyoming senior Brian Andrews, on his way to being crowned champion of the heavyweight class at the UVU Round Robin Tournament on Saturday afternoon. With his three match victories, Schultz remains one of five Sun Devil wrestlers who are undefeated this season.

"We came here with two freshman, so today was a great day of learning. You always want to win, but it's a must that you learn and develop every time you compete," assistant coach Lee Pritts said. "Cohlton and Julian made adjustments from match to match as well as mid-match adjustments which is great to see. Cohlton knocked off his first top-ten opponent and controlled in all aspects of the match. We can't wait to watch the video and get back to work for this upcoming week."

Instead of the traditional head-to-head dual meets and having a team score awarded to No. 8 Arizona State, No. 25 Wyoming and Utah Valley, the wrestlers each wrestled individually in their respective weight classes in a bracket tournament. There was no team score awarded, but a weight class champion for each weight class.

Schultz's day began against Utah Valley's redshirt sophomore Chase Trussell on mat one.

Neither wrestler was able to truly get an advantage on one another, so the majority of the match was in neutral position. Trussell began the second period on the bottom as he looked to earn the escape point, but Schultz held him off for 1:57 before Trussell claimed the point for a 1-0 lead.

In the remaining time of the second period, neither would score a point. Schultz would head into the third period with an advantage over Trussell for selecting to start from the bottom. He quickly earned his escape point to tie the match, forcing the bout into a frenzy of overtimes. Ultimately Schultz was crowned with the 2-1 decision victory after a final escape point was awarded.

No. 10 Brian Andrews and Schultz held each other scoreless for the first period and half of the second before the Sun Devil had a quick take down over Andrews to give himself a 2-0 lead. In seconds following the take down, Andrews claimed an escape point to cut the score in half.

Andrews earned another escape point after beginning on the bottom for the third period, but as the time ticked away Schultz shut his momentum down with another take down for the 4-2 win.

Wyoming sophomore Brooks Baker was on the mat against Schultz for his final bout of the day. The two pushed back-and-forth in neutral for the entire three-minute period before Baker earned an escape point at the beginning of the second period.

Schultz, still scoreless, would begin the final period on the bottom and earned the escape point midway through forcing another match into overtime. With no points awarded, the 30-second overtime period began and Schultz held Baker from earning the escape. With the match 1-1 as they entered another round of overtime, Schultz finished the bout hastily with points from an escape and two takedowns for a 6-2 victory.

Due to COVID-19 protocols, fellow redshirt freshman Julian Chlebove was the only other ASU wrestler who competed in the round robin tournament.

The Pennsylvania native went 1-2 in the 141lb weight class in the afternoon. Chlebove's lone victory came in round two against Wyoming's Darren Green with the Sun Devil striking first with a take down, but Green followed back with an escape. Chlebove added another two points to the board and again Green earned himself the single escape point to cut the lead to 4-2.

Chlebove would allow Green to escape from the bottom to begin the second period, but would snag him onto the mat for his third take down of the match and he would go onto win by decision 7-4.

Head coach Zeke Jones and the Sun Devils will compete against former ASU assistant coach Chris Pendleton and his new program, Pac-12 foe Oregon State on Saturday, Jan. 30 at 4 p.m. MST in Corvallis.
