It was a historical day for the Sun Devil (2-0) offense, as the 24 goals and 13 different goal scorers represented new program records. Additionally, the 18-goal margin of victory matched a program-high. For the second consecutive game, the Maroon & Gold took control early on the road, building an early and insurmountable lead.
"It is extremely important," Coach McCormack mentioned in referenced to the team's fast start. "The draw controls are a big piece of that. We were able to do a good job with that today, which was a major focus of ours this week. Anytime you can get a jump on a team, you try and do that."?? SUN DEVILS WIN ??

Arizona State sets a program record with 2?4? goals in a dominant victory over Detroit! #ForksUp pic.twitter.com/jUZCwOFnZF
Arizona State put together a fantastic effort in all phases of the game, with the offense and defense functioning at a high level. Kaylon Buckner and Taylor Carson paced the offense with four points each, while Kerri Clayton, Carley Adams, Kate Dougherty, and Tess Keiser all had three points. Berkeley Bonneau looked sharp in net, making six saves in 40 minutes of action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The tone was set early by the Sun Devils, as the Titans quickly realized they would have their hands full this afternoon.
- Picking up right where she left off in the season opener, Kerri Clayton was a factor in the first few minutes of the game. She made sure Arizona State was on the board first, scoring a goal less than three minutes in. The redshirt senior wasted no time recording a multi-goal performance, waiting only 30 seconds to record her second goal.
- The next two Sun Devil goals came courtesy of the free-position, as the team capitalized from the eight-meter. The first came off the stick of Taylor Carson, who scored her first goal of the 2020 campaign. Kaylon Buckner followed suit with a goal after drawing a foul, the start of a big day for the sophomore.
- Freshman Anna Winkeler provided an excellent encore after her two-goal performance in her first collegiate game. She gave the Sun Devils a 5-0 lead with 22:45 left, converting off a slick feed from Kylie Kroeger.
- A suffocating defensive effort kept Detroit off the board for the first ten minutes. Once the Titans scored, Carley Adams had an immediate response, scoring a free-position goal with her team a man down.
- It took Kerri Clayton only 13:27 of game time to register a hat trick, as her first half production was off the charts for the second consecutive game.
- Kaylon Buckner continued her brilliant performance, putting Arizona State up 8-1 after finishing off a feed from Maddy Hunter.
- A pair of Sun Devils found the back of the net for the first time this season to extend the lead, keeping the pressure on the home team. First up, Kate Dougherty beat the goaltender with a well-placed shot. In the following sequence, Lia Willis cut through the Titans' defense and finished to put ASU up 10-1.
- Anna Winkeler made it two multi-goal games to open her collegiate career, responding to a Titans' goal with one of her own. Emily Glagolev did what she does best, finding a cutting Winkeler in scoring position despite not having much space.
- After Detroit scored a third goal with nine minutes in the half, Berkeley Bonneau decided to take over. The Sun Devil goalkeeper made several incredible saves throughout the first half to keep the Titans off the board, shutting down the Detroit attack to give her team momentum heading into the half.

- Helping build that momentum was freshman Tess Keiser, who took advantage of her playing time. She scored her first collegiate goal at the 7:25 mark in the first half, assisted by Lia Willis.
- "Tess went out there and competed, which is exactly what we expected," Coach McCormack remarked. "I am happy to see her hard work pay off."
- Kate Dougherty's second goal of the first half put her team up double digits in the first half.
- The Sun Devils excelled in special situations at the end of the half, helping them extend the lead even more. Being down a man was not an issue, as Kaylon Buckner still managed to score, giving her a first-half hat trick. Carley Adams scored the more traditional route, as her late first-half goal came with ASU a man-up. The Sun Devils took a 15-3 lead into halftime.
- Kaylon Buckner ensured there was no drop-off in the scoring to start the second half, tying a career-high with her fourth goal less than a minute in.
- Freshman Lindsey Spies saw her first collegiate action in goal, relieving Berkeley Bonneau with 20 minutes left in the contest. She came in ready to play, making a save and playing an active role in the defense.

- "Lindsey came in and did a nice job for us," Coach McCormack observed. "I was impressed with how prepared she was to play."
- The success from the free-position continued, as Maddy Hunter recorded her first goal of the season from that spot.
- In her return to the Midwest, Northbrook, Ill. native Brynn Holohan registered her first collegiate goal, putting the Sun Devils up 18-5 on a free-position shot.

- "it was great to see Brynn get a goal and provide us a spark," Coach McCormack reflected. "She continues to work hard and contribute in many ways."
- Taylor Carson took over for the next few minutes, as she scored a pair of goals in a two-minute span, giving her a hat trick and the Maroon & Gold a 20-5 lead.
- With a running clock being implemented due to the size of the Sun Devils' lead, the pace of the game slowed down.
- This didn't stop Maria Villanti from getting on the board for the first time in 2020, as she finished off a feed from Tess Keiser.
- Keiser would also get credit for the assist on the next goal, as sophomore Katie Brodsky became the third Sun Devil to collect her first collegiate goal on the afternoon.
- Paige McGlotlhin kept playing until the final whistle, scoring the goal that tied the program record for goals.
- Katie Brodsky's second goal down the stretch was the record breaker, as Arizona State cruised to a 24-6 victory.
- "Brods (Katie Brodsky) was tremendous off the bench," Coach McCormack said. "She made a significant impact and brought a lot of energy to end the game."
- Several new program records were set in the Sun Devils' 24-6 victory over Detroit.
- The 24 goals are the most in program history, surpassing the previous mark of 23 set against Presbyterian on March 3rd, 2018.

- Emily Glagolev recorded two assists yet again, her 16th multi-assist performance of her career.
- Arizona State's pressure defense created problems for a second-straight opponent, as they caused 11 turnovers, forcing the Titans into 19 total turnovers.
- After being called for 20 fouls and allowing 13 free-position shots in the first game, the Sun Devils committed only 11 fouls and allowed four free-position attempts, something that satisfied Coach McCormack.
- "Absolutely," Coach McCormack responded when asked if his team's discipline improved. "That was something we harped on a bit after last week, tried to clean up, and get back to what we have been teaching. You saw that come out today. We limited them there, so that was nice."
- Coach McCormack's squad already has two road wins this season, matching their total from all of last year.
- The 40 goals scored by Coach McCormack's squad are the most in program history over the first two games.
- The Sun Devils held a healthy advantage in all phases of the game, winning the ground ball (23-12) and draw control (22-9) battle.
- Maura Cissel earned 11 draw controls, matching the single-game program record.
- Four different Sun Devils collected at least three ground balls (Maddy Hunter 4, Mallory Martel 3, Lia Willis 3, Emily Glagolev 3).
The Sun Devils continue their Midwest road trip, facing a historic challenge on Sunday when they take on No. 3 Northwestern inside Ryan Fieldhouse at 11 am MST. By claiming the No. 3 ranking entering the matchup, the Wildcats represent the highest-ranked opponent Arizona State has faced in the brief history of the program.
"Making the trip to Northwestern will be a great experience for our program," Coach McCormack mentioned earlier in the week. "It is an exciting opportunity for us to compare ourselves with one of the most talented teams in the country."
The toughest challenge of the non-conference schedule also provides a unique storyline. Former Northwestern Assistant Coach Tim McCormack leads Arizona State into a familiar place. After spending six seasons on Head Coach Kelly Amonte Hiller's staff, Coach McCormack will prepare to face a familiar foe in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
"We have to take it one day at a time and make sure that we get ourselves together here. Do the post work and recovery stuff properly and get back after it Sunday."
Sunday's showdown with No. 3 Northwestern will be shown at this link on Big Ten Network Plus, which requires a subscription. For live stats of the game, visit the following link.
