SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Sun Devil Diving's David Hoffer and basketball's Kianna Ibis are the 2018-19 Pac-12 Tom Hansen Medal award winners from Arizona State, as announced by the conference on Tuesday. The honor is given annually to an outstanding senior male and female student-athlete from each of the conference's 12 institutions for "the greatest combination of performance and achievement in scholarship, athletics, and leadership."
While his presence transcends his performance in the pool, Hoffer represented the epitome of a student-athlete during his time in maroon and gold, graduating in 2018 with a B.S. in Economics, a B.A. in Business and a Leadership and Ethic Certificate as a part of the Tip of the Fork cohort.
The Colorado-native continued to compete as a graduate student, working toward a master's in public policy while holding an Innovation Policy and Design Fellowship with Dr. Michael Crow's office. Hoffer worked on a variety of tasks and research assignments that were forwarded to President Crow to make decisions on the direction of the university.
In the diving well, Hoffer was a four-time Pac-12 Diver of the Month who punched a ticket to the NCAA Swimming and Diving National Championships in three of his four seasons as a Sun Devil. Hoffer peaked during his senior campaign, competing to All-American honors for the first time in his career after placing 15th overall in the three-meter springboard event in Austin. He also took home podium finishes in all three diving events at the Pac-12 Championships among some of the top diving talent in the country.
Hoffer competed on the national diving circuit as well, finishing third in the men's three-meter springboard Olympic Trials Final Qualification event as a sophomore in 2015-16. He also qualified for the finals in the same event at the USA Diving Championships in August 2017, finishing in fifth place. Hoffer plans to continue excelling in diving as he will graduate next spring with his master's degree and looks to qualify for the 2020 Olympic Trials.
Ibis was also a star for the Sun Devils, representing one of the more prolific players in recent history for head coach Charli Turner Thorne. The Nebraska native was a two-time All-Pac-12 selection while also finishing ninth in ASU history in career field goals with 494.
The graduating senior scored 20+ points 14 times in her four years as a Sun Devil including a career-high 30 points in ASU's 2017 win at Utah, representing the most points by a Sun Devil since 2004. She also contributed five career double-doubles with two in the 2017-18 season and three in 2018-19.
During Ibis' four years at ASU, she consistently served the Valley, compiling over 60 hours of community service. Ibis dedicated her time to serving at Pat's Run every year, assisted with basketball camps and clinics with youth non-profit organizations and led Character Code assemblies in elementary schools across the Valley. Throughout Ibis' career, she was a role model for adoptee player "Little Jackie," who has battled cancer on and off from a very young age.
In the classroom, Ibis was a three-time Pac-12 All-Academic honorable mention honoree, graduating with her degree in Interdisciplinary Studies, concentrations in Health Innovations and Wellness Foundations in May 2019.
